USF applicants 2013

U.S.A. Florida

Anyone applying to USF's (University of South Florida) nursing program?. I feel discouraged because I heard how competitive and rigorous it is.I have a 3.7 GPA. finished about half of my pre-reqs, got A's in all of my science courses. A B in statistics, ethics, and humanities:sarcastic:. I'm currently an ambassador at a community college and volunteering at a hospital. If those aren't good enough to get in the program I don't know what will lol. Is anyone here a USF nursing student? I would love to hear your experiences. I hope I can at least get into USF or my community college. If those fail..then it's off to or technical for me!!

Well, I'm currently awaiting my application status from the university overall I have a 3.65 gpa now so kinda bummed..but it is what it is. I just hope I can get accepted with that low a gpa ..if not time for plan B!!!

Hello All,

Im a pre Nursing student at HCC that just completed all my pre-reqs and applied for the Spring 2014 entree Class. Im also considering the USF program but have a question that im hoping someone on this post can help answer for me. Does the USF Nursing program provide evening classes for someone like me that works a 9 to 5? Or are they strictly a daytime program? I really would prefer to go directly into the BSN program at USF if they have an evening program. If not i will just complete me ADN @ HCC the do the ADN to BSN bridge program at USF online.

fxcolon- USF does not offer an evening program. All of our classes and clinicals are during the day. Even HCC might have a hard time accommodating a 9-5 job. One of my friends attended the SPC evening program and classes started around 1 or 2pm. So hopefully your job is flexible with you.

Good luck to you on starting nursing school! If you have the opportunity to go to USF, give it some thought! USF is an outstanding nursing school. I wouldn't trade my experience there for anything!

Okay now the process begins..I have to write the essay :wideyed: and then submit the application to await. Not to mention my pre req gpa is higher than my overall one. I'm not gonna lie money and car issues can be a problem for this program but I'm hoping it'll all work out in the end. Where's my USF applicants of 2013 at?? Lets do this!!

Hello all

My application is submitted with a 3.8 overall GPA and 3.8 prereqs (I think) I am not so sure of my GPA because I have a B in Psych and a B in Micro but A in everything else. However, I took Sociology as well and got an A. Now If someone would please give me an idea of what my GPA might be because they require Psych OR Sociology but not both. My question is how would that work? would they look at Psych (which would make my GPA a 3.8) or take Sociology (making it a 3.9)? and I also calculated that I have 415 community service hours. Do they even care about that?

I'm working on my essay now too. I have a questions does anyone know if for the 2 page essay do they want us to re-write the questions down and answer them one by one or not the write the questions down and make it a long essay.

I hope that makes sense.

PalmHarborMom, I have the same questions. I got accepted to the school, but I'm so stressed with this writing sample. Is there any ways that you can help please. Would like to get some advice from you. Thank you in advance.

I was a transfer student. I was told by the USF advising counselor that for nursing you must have at least a 3.6 to even apply to the university (if you are applying as a transfer & want to declare your major as nursing). Unfortunately, USF thinks high GPAs make good nurses. They base their admissions on GPA (no interview, no references). This is a shame because it takes much more than getting good grades to be a great nurse, but I can't blame them because they want a higher retention & progression rate. I applied to another university & graduated with my BSN cum laude. So don't get discouraged :)

xmadmoizellex & Miss Dia- The essay counts as 40% of the points awarded to each applicant. They do not want you to write each question, then answer them. It needs to be an essay that includes the answers to all the questions. Make sure that you have no grammar, punctation or spelling errors. Usually people make the essay personal. Everyone wants to become a nurse to help people so really get into what inspired you to be a nurse. Maybe it was a family member or friend that became ill or a nurse that helped you.

I suggest that you take your essay to the writing center at USF (if you are already a student there). Someone other than a family member needs to read it and give you an honest critique. Personally, I was a student at both SPC and USF at the time I applied and used the SPC English tutors to critique my essay.

Here is the way that I thought about it... Everyone has a great GPA so the essay is your time to shine. Make it great! Make the person reading your essay want to see you as a Bull Nurse.

Good luck to you both!

Thank you so much PalmHarborMom! I'm just trying to review my essay now. I'm a Valencia College student in Orlando so I am going to make an appointment in the writing center to see how it goes.

Miss Dia- when you bring your essay to the writing center, make sure you bring the instructions for the essay. I really appreciated the feedback I received from the SPC tutors. At the very least, it gave me a tad bit of confidence that what I submitted would boost my chances.

And because I know that someone will ask. I received notification that I was accepted about 2 weeks after the deadline to apply. Do not be discouraged if you know other people that hear something before you. I knew people that heard about a week before I did.... However, they were not accepted. So no news may be good news.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

Thank you for responding to my post. Lucky for me HCC does have an evening program from 6pm to 9pm two days a week, with clinicals on Saturdays. I was thinking about going straight into the BSN program at USF but it looks like that will not be an option for me. I guess i will need to take the long rout, ADN from HCC then transfer to USF for the RN to BSN transision program. Thank you and Good Luck in you Nursing Studies...:-)
