Just wondering if there are any USF applicants out there? I had a couple questions :)

I'm applying for summer 14 :) I'm also doing my pre-reqs here

I will be applying to USF Summer 2014 nursing program as well ! (:

Are you doing the RN to BSN program?

I'm going for regular BSN track.

Is this everyones first time applying to USF's nursing program?!

Yes, my 1st time

I'm applying for Summer too! And it's my first time as well!

What's everyones GPA/ pre-req GPA ?

I'm so excited for this application to open up ! ( :

What questions do you have? I'm halfway through my BSN with USF, maybe I can help.

One thing they hold in high regard is the essay. One of my professors said she read every single essay, and chose the people who sounded like they were passionate about nursing and really wanted to be nurses. They're not looking for prior experience or perfect transcripts (at least two of us failed one science class in my cohort). They're looking for passion and commitment.

The professors are great, no one is out to get you or flunk you. I know some have been threatened with failing clinicals for chronic lateness, but that's on them. They really want us to succeed and be great nurses. I couldn't be more proud of USF.

Thank you NewYorkerGirl for the information ! (:

I've been working on my essay for about four months now waiting for it to be perfect haha.

Do you know what the average cum. GPA and prereq GPA was for the people that got accepted ? How are you liking the program ?

No one has really talked about their GPA, and I don't remember any professor mentioning an average. You can call the pre-nursing advisor who might have that information. I know only about 25% of applicants were accepted last summer.

I'm doing the accelerated program, and honestly its moving too fast for me, but I'm surviving. Now that it's winter break I'm using the Kaplan program they made us buy to practice and review. Only a nursing student would be studying over vacation!

I like it a lot. I wish I had gotten into the VA system, but they assign us based on zip codes, and some Tampa people have to drive all the way to Sarasota. You need a good car: I put 5,000 miles on it in 3 months!!! But I live far from campus, and they have a clinical site one mile from my house, but I can't attend that site because it's for regular BSNs, not ABSNs. So, instead of driving two miles roundtrip to clinical, I drive 80 miles roundtrip. So they are not flexible or commuter friendly (I complain about it in all my student surveys.) But it's only one year, and it's so worth it to get a BSN in one year rather than going to a local community college for two years, and then needing to do an ASN-BSN since no hospitals here will hire ASN's.

We've also been warned that the Tampa area is saturated with nurses and nursing schools, so I hope you plan to move after graduation. My hospital recently received 400+ applications for 17 nurse resident jobs. :sarcastic: I can't even get a PCT/CNA job around here. I'm planning to move to upstate NY after graduation, but am open to other suggestions.
