University of Miami Accelerated BSN Summer 2015

U.S.A. Florida

Hello :)

I am kind of early with this thread, but I am pretty excited about the possibility of starting nursing school in May! Anybody else out there considering UM's ABSN program for summer 15? Also, anybody that has gotten in the program if you don't mind sharing helpful information, please do! I will still have 3 outstanding pre-reqs that I am registered to take in Spring. My cum GPA & pre-req GPA without those last 3 classes will be a 3.3 for both. I think I have a fair chance, could be better! (and will be once I finish pre-reqs) But anyway, share your thoughts about this program if you are considering as well! & good luck :)

Hi there! I am also interested in applying to UM's ABSN program. I was actually hoping that someone started a thread soon, so thanks for doing so! I've finished most of my pre reqs, just missing micro lab next semester. I know it's not required for this program but it is for many others, so I thought I'd take it just in case. I graduated from the University of Pensylvania with a BA in Psychology and I'm now back home in Miami! Where are you applying from? Are you a FL resident? Also, when do you think it would be best to submit our applications? I was hoping to do so sometime early January? Not sure if that's too early. I know I have more questions but I can't think of them right now, lol. I'll make sure to post them when I remember! Thanks again for starting the thread and good luck applying! :D

Hi! So excited someone replied lol, I went ahead and started it because I kept reading the old ones! It seems like it's about the time those of us wanting to apply for summer had a thread, so you're welcome! I think micro actually is a requirement, I know it is for other programs too so I am taking that next semester as well. Oh that's cool you went up north for your BA. I went to University of North Florida and have a Bachelors in Health Administration. Yes I am a FL resident, North Florida but ready to go South! I was thinking of applying in January too. After my grades from this semester post on my transcript! I already started the application, a little excited haha. Ask as many questions as you want I have a lot as well! .. How is your GPA/ stats & do you know anybody that was in the program? Good luck to you as well! :)

Yeah, I had been reading old threads as well, lol! We should also make a facebook page around the time we're applying to reach out to more people! And yeah, micro is required, I'm finishing it up this semester. I called UM a while back and asked about the lab portion and they told me that it wasn't required. I'm still taking micro lab next semester since other schools do require it. And nice!! It's good that you're getting a head start! :D

As to my stats, my pre-req GPA is currently 3.8 and my cumulative GPA is about 3.1. My cumulative GPA is not the best but I hope the admissions committee can take into account that I went to an Ivy League, so my courses were extremely difficult :( I took a lot of difficult courses my freshman and sophomore year before I considered nursing (calculus, physics, chemistry, etc), and that really hurt my GPA, but I did well in all my pre-reqs, so I hope that helps! I don't know anyone that has been accepted personally, but there is a facebook page for those who applied for Spring admission with lots of members who got accepted. Hope that helps!

Wow, that's funny you were reading old threads too! They have a lot of information! Yeah we should definitely do the Facebook when the time comes. & Oh okay, yeah the micro I'm taking is a micro & lab in one. Yeah definitely want to have a back up plan so having the pre-reqs done for all the schools you're interested in is smart. I was also considering FIU, their accelerated program is new the first cohort is in January! But I would love to go to UM and start/finish sooner! Yeah, I wouldn't worry about the cum GPA your pre-req GPA is great! One thing I am kinda concerned about is the cost $40k is a lot! Were you considering loans? Hopefully the scholarships are plentiful! & Hopefully more people will eventually chime in! I'm sure closer to the deadline people will.

Hey I will also be applying for the summer program! I am very excited to be applying and I am from NY! I have all of my prereqs done and its just a matter of submitting my application. My GPA is a 3.1 and my pre-req gap is around 3.6-3.7. What do you guys think of my stats? Also I wanted to know, as far as the essay question, did you answer each portion separately? or did you just write an entire essay and just paste it into each one?

After sending in the application, do they wait until after the deadline to notify you of decisions or they let you know fairly soon?

Good Luck to you all!

Hey! I think your stats are great, you definitely have a good chance at getting accepted in my opinion. As far as the essay questions, I haven't done that part of my app yet but I did look at it. Since there are different boxes I was going to do my answers separately. & judging from past threads it doesn't seem like they wait until the deadline to begin accepting! Which I hope is the case because I want to find out ASAP! I'm going to apply either this month or in January and hoping the wait isn't too long. Good luck to you as well!

Are you considering private loans, if you don't mind me asking? It seems like the only possible way for me to afford this program!

For the stats requirement would a basic one count?

Yes I'm pretty sure it's just a general stats class. The course description seemed so & I called a while back to make sure.. I took sta2023 (elementary statistics) and they said they accept that.

@ambitious_shan do you know how they convert quarter to semester units?

i'm submitting mine before christmas break.

I'm so glad someone started one for Summer 2015! I've been reading old ones obsessively. I applied in November but had a lot of back and forth with Nursing CAS over the transcript entry, and I think there was some transcript/mail delay with Thanksgiving so last week it's finally verified and done. I'm still taking 4 pre-reqs next semester, and I'm hoping this semester's pre-reqs post finals will work out to be around a 3.5-3.7 GPA and my undergrad GPA was a 3.7. I want to know when we'll find out decisions. I'm only applying to UM so I'm really nervous.
