south florida workforce money??

i am going to be attending MDC in miami (RN) and someone in the fin aid office told me about the south florida workforce program, that gives grant money to train unemployed workers....she said i "may" qualify because AO nursing students aren't supposed to work.....

i called the office, but they were very vague, and asked me to come to some five hour orientation that is offered every other odd-numbered thursday (okay, i'm exaggerating, but in other words, it was a little confusing).

anyone know anything about this? what the eligibility is? anyone used this money to fund their RN training?

I'm not sure of the eligibilty requirements, but I know that the program exists. My brother used the workforce program to fund his training for his class A license. Perhaps, you can check out their website or call another office and hope to speak with someone more informative.

Several of my friends who graduated with me were a part of this and it paid for most of their costs, some only used it for uniforms and tuition so they would have some set aside for a review course and boards, it's worth the interview and orientation, the worst they can do is say no, but if you don't go you'll never know if they might have said yes, good luck!!

GO, GO GO, they will make you jump through hoops but it is worth it. They pay for my tuition, uniforms, and books. They even bought my shoes and stethoscope.

thanks!!! i'll call again and see if i can pin down the orientation times a little better........do you know if there's an income qualification? what kind of eligibility is it? i'm just a plain old girl with no bells and whistles that attract free money, typically LOL.

I used them to get my LPN back in 1998 and they wanted me to be almost homeless before they helped me. They may have changed now.

I think they require you to make less than $30 per hour. Which I don't make so I was in.

You don't have to be "low income" or unemployed. They want to pay for the classes because you agree to work for a year after you graduate (you have to work in Florida, doesn't matter where).

You also have to call and check in every month. I always call and ask if they have money to give me for gas. They give you a gas card for $50 dollars. (Which I'm very happy to take)

I think you still have to check in for a year after you graduate. A simple email is all it takes, no big deal.

They also pay for you to take the boards.

I went to the "orientation" and they said the only way they offer to "help" you any way shape or form is if you are unemployed and "really" need the help..they also make you check in with them once a week and do a "job hunt" for a whole month and meet with recruiters..a whole bunch of cr*p..which made absolutely no sense to me..

It was a waste of time..

That is the same thing they did to me sa87. I was working full time in 1993 making less than 12000 a year and a single mom @ that time. I was told by one of the case worker's to quite working and come back about six months before the class start. I was sooooooooo emborificed I had to go on assistance but I did it for one year. Now that I am older and wiser if I though I could get any type of assistance I would try:chuckle What you should do is check with the biggest local hospital in your area to see if they will help you. That is what I did it was 190 people and we shared 250000. Now I recieved a small portion of that money because of my gpa but some people got full schol. Of course the money is paid to the school in the student name to pay for every thing. I'm glad the money that i got covered 2 classes books and supplies, and 1 class I challenged:yeah:

hmmm, I'm in Palm Beach, guess it is different in other counties. I told people in my class and they were also able to get it without problems.

It seems if you are in Broward, WF$ is hard to get. They appear to be more lenient if you live in Dade and go to a Dad WF office.

Hi Mag.

Did you have any success with this? I'm going to go over there in person tomorrow or Wed. (T.S. Fay is in the way) and find out about it. My cousin received money for LPN school. books, uniforms, gas and Nclex. I just left my job Friday, so that seems to be a prereq.

By the way we only have a few days left.
