U.S.A. Florida

Seriously considering taking an online certified RN Coder/Auditor course. Has anyone taken it? Is this a needed, lucrative field? Any advice?

Thanks

Well, I've only put out one resume to Clinical Coding Solutions. They did reply back after some time and told me that they did not currently have openings and sometimes nurses wait for a year before a position opens. I was told that my information would be put into their data base. I will get more aggressive in another month or two and will post back here with any results.

Thanks for the speedy reply. Might you check out medassurant. A friend of mine works there. We are in Maryland, but I believe that they have offices

in a lot of states. There is a lot of positions here. My friend does chart review and was trained in coding. It didn't seem like the training was very long and I don't know if she is certified. We havn't been in touch much lately. This is something that I have been thinking about for awhile. Along with case management, forensics, community health...etc..... Can't figure out what I wan't to be when I'm grown up. I have done pediatric home care for 11 years and I work PRN in the OR. My pediatric patient has had a lot of illness lately and has been in the hospital. The OR is slow... Husband got layed off.... YIKES..... Gotta do something. Not sure if I will be comfortable giving up patient care full time to do chart review/coding. But if I take coding @ the Community College it will take about a year and be costly. If I go to work for a company such as medassurant (spelling??)... they will pay for it... So I have a decision to make... Good luck with your coding aspirations... Thanks for listening... Sorry for the rant....... TAKE CARE!!!!

I've heard good and bad things about Medassurant. The main thing is the work is not steady. I may check it out though. FYI there is a thread or two about Medassurant. I'm sure if you did a search you could find it.

Thanks... I will do that... My friend has been steady for about 1.5 years now. She even got a promotion.. Makes good money and has good benies too.. Good luck... thanks again..

So, how is your job search going? I'm curious if you've had any job offers without actual coding experience. Good luck.:)

I finally did get hired by "Clinical Coding Solutions". I'm supposed to undergo some training via conference call in two weeks and then start working. I did have to update my computer to meet certain specs the company has (one being a two screen system) at my own expense. The work is as an independent contractor so there are no benefits and you have to commit to two "shifts" or work days a week but as I understand it they do not have to be an entire eight hours. I had sent my resume to them the end of last year and I guess they hire new nurses as they pick up new accounts. I'm going to work weekends for them to start and see how it goes...

Congratulations on your new job! I hope they provide you with enough training to be successful. I worked as a coder for many years and it can be a challenge. With a nursing background, you will catch on quickly.

That's very kind. Thanks so much! I hope it works out. It would be nice to stay home!

Hi Glenmar, I was just following up to see how your coding job is going. Are you liking it so far? I'm interested in making a change to coding as well. Thanks!

Hi netty78. I've just finished my second week and am still considered "in training" even though I am getting paid for my work. It is interesting and I'm enjoying it even though I'm not up to speed yet where I'm making decent money since we're paid by the chart. Right now I'm just focusing on learning the account and being as accurate as possible. I feel very fortunate to have gotten into this though. Seems like a pretty good job.

Glenmar,

can you give an update on the clinical coding solutions rn coder position? how is it going? I am going to sit for the cpc exam next month and then send my resume to ccs. I would love your thoughts on this company/job..thanks!!

I started in June, have been trained on one account where we just did facility ED procedure coding and am now being trained on an account where in addition to that we also do the diagnostic coding. They are very nice people to work for and give you a lot of support. Although you do get some orientation via webinar and teleconference it is a learn as you go situation and it takes some time to get your speed and accuracy up. I'm enjoying it and they are very good about paying you on time although it is only once a month. I paid my mortgage with last month's check though so it is a very nice part time gig. Once you get your CPC results get a resume into **** ***** at CCS. I had to wait six months to get the job but they are brining on new RN coders all the time to man the new accounts they are bringing on. Good luck!
