Nursing schools in Florida

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hey everyone, I am in need of some help. I am currently 23 years old with an A.A degree. I attended Miami Dade College and I finished with a 3.15 gpa. I originally wanted to attend a university and receive a BSN but, it seems like everything school is way too competitive. Now I feel that I should try to get my RN then go for my bsn but I am not to sure about that either. So what exactly should I do? I feel as if time is against me and i want to get my career started.

Should I look into getting into an RN program?

I was considering FIU but I do not think they will accept me because i received a "D" in nutrition a coupld years back.

How is online nursing or even keiser college?

Go back to school and raise my gpa?

I live in the Miami area. I eventually want to have a master degree in not to distant future.

I hope this is posted in the right forum.

Hey there:wink2: you are in the same situation I was in a couple of years back. My plan was to go through the ASN program at my community college and then eventually go back for my BSN. However, life played a part in that plan and by time I had all my pre-reqs completed, the waiting list was 2 years to get started. I figured those 2 years, I could take the last several classes I had left to get my AA (took about 2 semesters full time) and then just apply to BSN programs in FL. I did that and applied to the schools of nursing that I thought I had a good chance in getting accepted to. My gpa was a 3.25, so I thought that was pretty good and I had A's and B's in all my pre-reqs. Instead of putting in like 10 applications and spending $50 for each one, I decided to call and speak to the dean of each nursing program and asked what the average gpa was of those accepted, how many students were accepted each term, and so on. I started to learn that a 3.25 was good, but not competitive enough for the majority of the programs at the large universities. I actually applied to 4 schools (FGCU, Nova, Cookman, University of Miami), got waitlisted for 1 (later denied) and only got accepted to one. When I called FSU, their minimum GPA was I think a 3.0, and I was told the lowest cut off for those accepted was a 3.6. I didn't even apply at FIU because I was told from them you could not have any D's. Other large schools like UF and FSU, i didn't even bother applying. Well, anyway, i think it's up to you. are you willing to relocate to another city? Is there a waiting list for the community college programs in Miami? I know Miami Dade is really good down there. I would just check around and see who you may have a chance with before you put applications in. I'm not too sure about the online nursing programs.. they probably are more expensive as well as Keiser. Check it out though. As far as going back to school to raise your gpa, that's also another option. I would consider that if you have no luck in getting accepted to a few schools you apply to. You will get into atleast one!! Well, i hope all works out for you. Let me know what happens! I've been there too. (I'm 25 and have a year and 3 months left, so i nkow how you feel:jester: (Sorry so long!)

hi, i kinda feel what you are saying about the competition and unfortunately because of the economy right now more people it seem are going into nursing so therefore you have more people to compete against. 3.1 is not a bad GPA but considering the copetition you might want to see if you can redo a few classes in order to raise your GPA.

i'm not sure about online classes but keiser i know is very expensive, i went there but not for nursing, if you don't mind paying then you could look into trying them, the only other choice i think you have might be try somwhere else other than miami.

good luck

Keiser now has a long waiting list, you can try city college, i got in right away - but 1) they are very expensive and 2) hardly any schools accept credits from there. but if u do choose to go there if u dont complete the program you will be stuck! you would have to start all over from the begining. half way through the program i got a "C" in microbiology and they dismissed me from the program.

I just recently got accepted into the rn program with kaplan - which most of the classes are online but the clincals are done in south florida.

you can also try to get your lpn first - b/c miami dade has the lpn-rn bridge program that's not that competitive to get into.

Ladylex45,

I'd like to get some info on the kaplan rn program. What's their website??

Thanks

Kaplan is a very good nursing college. If you are dedicated to your studies you will do well.

Hey thx everyone.

I plan on taking 10 credits this semester at miami dade to raise my GPA some.

My back up will be attending an online college.

A couple more questions. Since I have an A.A in pre nursing will I automatically receive a B.A once i finish my nursing courses?

Has anyone tried excelsior online college?
