Moving to Gainesville

U.S.A. Florida

Published

I took care of my mother with alzheimer's at home for the past 7 years. Mom recently died at age 87 and now I am moving to Gainesville. What should I pack? Any good jobs for LPN's? Any words of advice would be greatly appreciated. I will probably be moving in July or August. Thanks so much.;)

I am sorry for your loss.

I do not know about the job market for LPNs, but you might want to look into some of these hospitals in Gainesville: Shands @ UF, Shands @ AGH, North Florida Regional Medical Center, the VA. I hear Shands @ AGH is closing, however - can anyone confirm this?

As far as things to pack, I would say bring all your necessities plus all kinds of clothing. Gainesville can get very hot in the summers and pretty cold in the winter time, even for FL.

AGH is closing, I can't remember when, though. I worked at UF Jax and they made the announcement this past Fall.

Shands at AGH is definitely closing, we have heard it will be around late October/November when they transition everything. There is a new cancer/trauma wing they are building at Shands UF which will offset some of this, but just know that the rumor mill is busy and some people are unhappy with the changes. Shands the VA are teaching hospitals and NFRMC is a private hospital which I believe is part of one of the big chains (HCA or Tenet?). I don't know what the job market is like for LPNs, but I've done clinicals as a student at all of the hospitals so I can at least share some basic opinions if you have more specific questions.

Also, if you'll be looking for housing I would try to line that up soon. All of the college students will be returning right around the time you're planning to move, and they usually line up their leases for August before they leave in the spring, so some apartment complexes and houses near campus fill up quickly.

Thanks Galore, tkablue and Sehsun. I am putting up the house here for sale in June. I am hoping it will sell fast. I didn't realize that Gainesville gets cold in the winter. I had thought that Florida was always warm and sunny. I don't know if I want to work in hospitals or nursing homes. I am thinking that I might try doing private duty home care and just have 1 patient instead. :bugeyes:I'm getting too old to deal with the stress of hospitals and nursing homes.

I live in Gville.....As an LPN you must either work in a nursing home which pays AWESOME, most here are about 25 an hour for PRN, and 22 and hour fulltime. There is ONE hospital here that hires LPN's, and that's NFRMC. The pay stinks, at 13.00 an hour though the experience is AWESOME for the resume and the skills department!

Good luck!

Thanks so much. :redpinkhe I am hoping to find a job in corrections or private duty nursing. If that doesn't work out, then I will check out the nursing homes. Which nursing home in Gainesville do you think is the best? The worst? I just got back from Gainesville after enjoying a 1 week vacation. I am sure looking forward to moving to Gainesville.
