MDC Fall 2011 - PART TIME Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

So far it appears like I've only been accepted into the part-time RN program at MDC.edu (Miami Dade College) for August 2011 (Fall 2011).

There is another LONG thread for MDC Fall 2011, but it isn't specific to the part-time program. I'm not sure if other students who have been accepted to the part-time program will start collaborating, but if they do, this might be one good place to start!

Sincerely,

Fem

P.S. Well, it has taken me 3 (three) tries to create a new discussion thread. I'm hoping this is in the proper place & location. I'm hoping I get some students post here. Collaboration is a wonderful thing.

Phaint,

My .02 cents. Get a job in the medical field. Preferably a hospital or nursing home.

Develop any skills you can in the medical field.. Do intermediate things to help increase your medical skills.

such as CNA, phlebotomist, MA, LPN, etc. In your situation, you may need to work longer, harder at achieving

your goals.

I've seen students with 3.2+ GPA's and Bachelor Degrees have a very difficult time in RN school. Not sure a direct route is right for you. Try some intermediate steps first. Again.... just my .02 cents.

Well I think I have a good background in the medical field. I work for UM as a Triager so when patients die in any palm beach, broward or dade county hospital they call me and I determine their eligibility for organ, bone, tissue, eye donation. I get face sheets, medical history, labs and all that faxed over to me for review. I think I got a good foot in the door personally.

AGREED 100%.... "got a good foot in the door".

Having your medical background experience will help you quite nicely, in my opinion. If you are working full-time in medical field and want to take a class + lab at a time, to guarantee you earn your A's and gain acceptance to RN school, I see no harm in it!

Maybe you had a lower GPA in high school... simply because you were not interested! I've known quite brilliant people who could care less about GPA's. But if you want in RN school, it is quite competitive, so earn your A's if possible. FAU & FIU had an approximate 1100 application rate compared to a

P.S. I think donating one's organs to science or medical field is an honorable thing to do! You are the first person I've heard of that is directly involved in that process. Must be very interesting.

Yeah it's definitely interesting :D Thanks again for all the advice, think I'll stick with MDCs program for now. :yeah:

Phaint,

I'm not 100% sure if you have started taking pre-requisite classes or not...

have you considered asking for recommended professors?

Some professors are really good at what they do!

I only have English out of the way, I was going to do the normal prereqs first then do the sciences last so they can be fresh in my mind by the time I apply to the program. I wonder where would be the best spot to ask about which MDC teachers are best for prereqs. hmm

Phaint,

You are probably already familiar with ratemyprofessors.com

That is where I found quality professors.

Ahh yes I forgot about that site, I used it years ago when I took my English class. :lol2:

Btw I must not have seen it if it was answered but do you happen to know how the schedule is for the MDC part time program? The hours/days?

Tuesday: 6:00P- 7:10P

Thursday: 6:00P- 7:25P

Saturday: 8:00A-10:45A

Saturday: 11:45A- 2:45P

Saturday: 8:00A-10:45A

Ah thank you very much. I would definitely have to do something about my job schedule then hmm... any clue when clinicals would be?

We probably won't know for sure until next week (if a teacher tells us) or later in the year (no clinicals first semester). But, my guess would be Saturday. Next semester we won't have as many clases but we will have a clinical.

Okay gotcha. Thanks a bunch :D
