MDC Fall 2011 - PART TIME Program

U.S.A. Florida

Published

Hi Everyone,

So far it appears like I've only been accepted into the part-time RN program at MDC.edu (Miami Dade College) for August 2011 (Fall 2011).

There is another LONG thread for MDC Fall 2011, but it isn't specific to the part-time program. I'm not sure if other students who have been accepted to the part-time program will start collaborating, but if they do, this might be one good place to start!

Sincerely,

Fem

P.S. Well, it has taken me 3 (three) tries to create a new discussion thread. I'm hoping this is in the proper place & location. I'm hoping I get some students post here. Collaboration is a wonderful thing.

Anyone have a syllabus yet? from any class?

Anyone know if we need the stethoscope & blood pressure cuff now? or in January.

The man at the bookstore said January... but that doesn't make sense to me?!

Not that I know, but seems like we would need it for:

NUR1025C = Fundamentals of Nursing Skills Lab? and/or

NUR1060C = Adult Health Assessment

Isn't the NUR1025L = Fundamentals of Nursing Clinical Lab going to be where we

are assigned & learn at a nursing home? (off-campus)

ANYBODY that knows or wants to speculate... love to hear your input.

a friend of mine who finished the course last year said we would need the supplies for the skills lab (the saturday class). they did not make them buy the bag with all the supplies (it was provided to them), but they did have to buy a stethoscope. she suggested i buy all the supplies already. i bought the stethoscope, but have not had time to get the bag yet. i was thinking i would get it before class on tuesday .

and, no, i have not received a syllabus yet =/.

MiaNur,

THANK YOU so much. I can't believe the bookstore manager said we don't need these items til January. You would think he would know!

Then again, why did the "required booklist" show that we needed med-surg books for Fall? Even the full-timers don't take Med-Surg classes til January.

THANKS AGAIN. I wish more part-timers were collaborating here!

A friend I met during orientation also told me to read the 34th chapter of fundamentals (I don't remember why) and said that the professor for the health assesment class sent an email asking everyone to read chapters 9, 10 and 12 from the jarvis examination book (I didn't get the email). So those are my plans for this weekend. I can't believe it's starting already.

MiaNur,

Was this friend you met during orientation a full-timer or part-timer?

I tried to look up each of my Professor's email addresses to ask/inquire of pre-1st-class-assignments. Only Ponce (Fundamentals of Nursing) had a MDC website but the information indicated it was from 2005. So, I didn't feel comfortable using that older info. I emailed her. Maybe get a reply?

My other 3 professors are not listed at faculty.mdc.edu/ProfessorName.

Is there another method to acquire professor email addresses?

So, I'm wondering WHICH professor has emailed students? No, I didn't get any email, either!!! Do all the part-timers have the same professor(s)?

THANKS SO MUCH. I will look at the Jarvis Exam book. My Health Assessment Class is Saturday, so seems like I will want to read those 3 chapters before Sat 8/27.

Prof. Ponce - Fundamentals of Nursing - I've met 2 students who have taken her. One student didn't even buy the textbook. Said Ponce relies heavily on powerpoint. But to also audio record her class.

THANKS MUCH. PLEASE KEEP POSTING!!! Anything you know. It is frustrating (again) to hear that students are getting emails but not me! I didn't get an email for the change of orientation dates, either! *argh* Fortunately, I read about the change of orientation dates on allnurses.com

Oh ... yep, I recall now, another location the email addy's can be found at:

http://www.mdc.edu/medical/nursing/faculty.asp

But nope, none of my other 3 prof's listed here.

The person I met was part-time. As far as who emailed, my guess would be Ponce. But I didn't get the email either, so I'm not sure. Here is my schedule:

MiaNur,

THANKS AGAIN.

So, it is frustrating to confirm that I am not receiving emails from MDC when I should be.

I wonder what the problem is?!!!!

Hi everyone,

I didn't recieve emails from professors either. I only bought the stethoscope in advance and I was told at the book store not to buy the med-surg until january. I emailed our Saturday professors weeks ago (about something else) and got no response. I haven't the slightest clue where to begin with this whole thing. I hope this wild disorganization does not follow us through the semester!

The bookstore man said the same thing to me, "I did not need to buy the med-surg books til later". Which makes sense to me as we don't start med-surg class+clinical til May/June 2012. One part-timer I met at orientation bought "everything on the booklist". I was trying to save a bit of money & buy things as needed.

I think I saw the med-surg book as "required textbooks" on Prof. Ponce webpage for Fundamentals of Nursing? which seemed odd to me. But I think it was from 2005. Maybe she is using the website, maybe not?

Yep, I'd feel more comfortable if RN-school-life was a bit more organized. But I'd also rather be proactive and ask questions (from anybody & everybody) now. The sooner I have accurate answers, the better I can tackle the upcoming challenges ahead.

NRSGRL,

Well, I guess I won't continue tracking down the Saturday professor's email addresses being that neither of them have responded to your email. If, by chance, they reply, KINDLY post so we know, too.

MIANUR,

Thanks for sharing your schedule. Highly likely to meet you soon! :D
