I'm a new grad RN and I'm offered per diem position at PSA Healthcare. Should I accept it?

Hello,

I just passed NCLEX one month ago, and ever since then I've been applying for a new grad RN positions everywhere; hospitals, clinics, everything that's not more than 1-2 hr drive away from my home. Yeah, I regret that I haven't applied earlier, but I was so busy studying for NCLEX, I had no idea when I would pass, all I could think about was passing, and at the end it took me 9 months to pass.

The only response I got was from PSA Healthcare. I told them that I'm a new grad, and I want to get as many hours as possible. But they said it's per diem position and their assignments go anywhere from 6 to 24 hours. They mentioned they do have training for new grads. On the application it said "Hiring New Grads", and then I told them in person that I am a new grad, so they are okay with that.

But I'm still not sure. I heard that it's recommended for new grads to work atleast 1 year in a hospital to get hands on experience, and this company is not exactly that. In the ideal world, I would want to get into a new grad nursing residency in a hospital, and then work full time there for a year or so. But I applied to all of the hospitals in the area, I applied for 2 residencies and never got a response from them.

I was thinking that maybe I can work at PSA Healthcare while searching for something in a hospital, and after a month, or two, or six (or however long it will take to get a response) I'll finally be able to get my foot into the hospital. I just want to stay home and do nothing while waiting, I don't want to waste any more time. I'm even okay with $17 per hour for start as PSA Healthcare offers, my main goal here is to get some experience as an RN.

So here are my questions: Did any of you ever worked for PSA Healthcare? What is it like working for them? Are they really New Grad friendly, or are they just saying that and then they'll throw me in a situation where I have no idea what to do?

I don't know what to do. Any suggestions?

Hi ally1991,

I was wondering if you decided to take the PSA job? if so, how is it going? I am a recent new grad and passed my NCLEX this week. I'm looking for a job and have applied to the Health First nurse residency program.

Yes, I took the job. I did a lot of research online, and PSA Healthcare sounds legit. I decided to give it a try because it's better than staying home, plus I still never got any responses from other job applications. I have orientation on Thursday and once I'll be in the system, I'll be able to work. It is so difficult to find a nursing job these days without any experience, good luck to you!

I hope you enjoy it! One of the pros with PSA is that you really do get to spend time with your patients.

Good luck on your new job Ally1991! :) If you can, post back on your experience of orientation and the first few weeks. I think home health is the wave of the future. It is definitely less expensive to have the patient recuperate at home versus the hospital. I'm so excited for you!! Did you apply to PSA directly on their website or did you find an advertisement through career builder or indeed?

Are you still with the company? How do you like it so far? Did they give you enough training?
