Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

I have a guy that was recommended thru school that will do a class just for us 45.00 each in sunrise/plantation area.

Seriously? Is it for renewals or first timers?

Hello E_Sarita and thank you!

As for preparing for school... Being organized and time management is essential! It looks like everyone is already getting their portfolio together which is great! You don't want to wait till the last minute to submit your documents and realize something is missing or incorrect. I wouldn't spend too much money on supplies just because it's really not necessary. However, I will say that a Littmann Classic stethoscope makes a world of difference when taking BP's. I paid about $70 on Medisave and had my name engraved on it and I love it! When it comes to shoes... you wouldn't believe me if I told you but I got mine at Payless for $16 (guy gave me a coupon) and they are SO comfy. They are all leather except the tongue and the brand is Champion. I was looking at Nursemate's which are great but I'll get those later. Save your money cause it will come in handy when you need an extra pair of scrubs, supplies or those days that you need to eat out cause you aren't going home till they kick you out of the library or Starbucks. :)

If you have the Perry & Potter books start reading the Vital Signs chapter (again this is for north campus, not sure about the other campuses). They test to the objectives so the second time you read through the book you can focus only on the objectives by highlighting or taking notes. Try not to focus so much on fluff either. You'll understand more once class starts and they will let you know what is expected of you. For right now just getting familiar with the book is fine.

Keep in mind that the summer is accelerated because of you losing 2 weeks so as soon as they teach you a skill plan on being in that lab asap to practice those skills. Return demo comes up fast and you don't want to wait till the last minute to log in your mandatory lab hours or risk having to re-do return demo. If for some reason you do have to re-do it... It's OK! It's not the end of the world and chances are you were extremely nervous. I told my professor I should of took a shot before coming in...lol. Also, something I should of done and didn't... Once you feel comfortable with a set of skills, ask one of the lab instructors to watch you so that they can give you constructive criticism. I used to see them go through the whole return demo list with other students when I was only asking for help here and there. Can I tell you that it makes a world of difference when you're use to one of them already watching you! Trust me when I say when I got to Process 2 return demo I was a lot more comfortable cause I did exactly that.

When it comes to math and pharm... You don't need the books. The math book is good but I opened it once and never again. They teach you the way they want you to learn it and give you plenty of practice problems. Please do not take the math lightly either. Practice, practice, practice! I passed on my first attempt for Process 1, took it for granted in Process 2 and failed the 1st attempt then passed with a 100% the next time around. They give you a chance to pass it again but I was so mad at myself cause I made silly mistakes costing me a lot of time away from lecture. I had to complete a 60 problem packet within 6 days to make sure I nailed it next time around. So please don't take math lightly. The pharm professor is hilarious! He tests straight from his powerpoints and does a review for the test. Never bought the book and got an "A" in the class.

I'm sure there is so much more I could go on about so feel free to ask any specific questions that I haven't covered. You all will do great and enjoy the rest of your time off!!! You're about to get on the biggest roller-coaster of your life, and just when you think the ride is about to stop it takes off again! However, I can truly say it's been one of the best rides of my life.

Great advice! Thanks Hope2bPicuRN :)

Friday is the preadmission session finally!! Don't forget to be early and bring a pen! See all of you 9 amer's bright and early!

Hi everyone. I am new here. First, congrats to everyone for the achievements. I got accepted to nursing for May 2013 at central campus. I can't wait to start. :)

I have a few questions if anyone could help me. I understand that soon at the pre-admission meeting they'll tell us about registration, background, drug screening, and other things. But I have questions regard to scrubs, shoes, and supplies. I want to go ahead and start shopping. Lol. Do I have to buy scrubs from BC ( with their logo?) because I have already some scrubs. Is there also an specific color? How about shoes? Color? Brand?

Thank you!

Hi and welcome. You must buy BC's tops because of the logo. As for shoes all white all leather. Nursemates are approved. As for supplies we've already discussed this if you read through the postings. Are you a 9 am or 1 pm on Friday?
