Broward College hopeful for May 2013 Nursing Program

U.S.A. Florida

I know there is a lot of confusion going around with the new requirements for the BC nursing program so I wanted to start a thread for those of us finishing prerequisites and applying in January. I'm in the Core class now, but other than that I'm finished with everything else and getting very excited to start next year!

I'm not applying to FAU but you could be talking about apples and oranges. FAU's program is a full 4-year BSN, while BC is an ADN with a RN-BSN bridge program if you desire to continue. The upside with FAU is that you will leave the school with your BSN (a plus in employment). The upside of BC is that in less than two years you will have an ADN which also allows you to become an RN and you can start working. Many employers will pay for your BSN when you're ready. Like anything else, it's difficult to get into if you don't have a strong academic record. I have heard that the accelerated BSN program (for students who already hold a bachelors in another field) is extremely difficult to get into at FAU.

As far as which school is best? The primary indicator of how good a nursing program is is their NCLEX pass rates. If you go to school, work your butt off for 2 or 4 years, at the end of that you want to be an RN who can get a job. The current statistics for both schools are excellent: BC has a 98% pass rate in 2012, while FAU has a 93% pass rate for the same period. So, if you use this criteria, BC is doing a better job of preparing their students for the NCLEX. By the way, it's the same test regardless of whether you graduated from an ADN program or a BSN program. I think that says something about BC's program.

I hope it helps!

BC does have a high NCLEX rate and is cheaper but they also fail a lot of students per semester. They also have a lot of retrackers. i know personally because I was a student in the program that did not make it so also consider applying to other programs.Because BC style of teaching is not for every student.

It's true that some students don't make it through the first few semesters at BC. I think that may have a lot to do with the level of preparation that a student has when they get into the program. Currently only four classes are needed as prerequisites to the program, putting some students at a disadvantage. It also moves quickly, which leaves little room for much else in your life during that time. I think as difficult as it is to get into other programs, it's just as difficult to stay in the BC program. It's six of one, half dozen of another - pick your poison! Every program is not going to be for every student. You should definitely go in with your eyes open and know your options long before starting any program.

dream61792, are you going back into the BC program or have you applied somewhere else?

I am currently taking the SLS class that is required for re trackers. I have not decided if I am seeking reentry or apply to another program yet.

Just stay where you are and retrack. A mutual friend who recently graduated December 2012 from BC was in the same situation as you were; and decide to retrack since she already had an idea how she should approach the same situation again with the same professor. Good Luck. Also, can you let me know what the SLS course number is or any other info regarding it. Thanks.

Good luck! I know another person who was on the re-track for BC and she said the SLS class was very helpful and she feels far more prepared for the program now than she was when she first went in. I hope everything works out for you. If you don't mind, can you tell us what you would have done differently the first time knowing what you know now?

It is SLS1501 for nursing students only.It has been helpful so far. I just do not understand why they offer this class to students who fail instead of before students start the program.

Applying for May 2013 on Monday!
