Q&A for Flight Nurses

Specialties Flight

Published

Greetings AN family! I recently graduated with my BSN this past Dec and am will be starting as a new grad in a surgical ICU (yay!). My ultimate goal is to become a flight nurse! I have done my research on all requirements an the extensive range of certifications that come with it but I haven't really seen any newer posts on here relating to this amazing field. So, I just had a few inquiries I am curious to know and would greatly appreciate any responses from those working/have worked as a flight nurse :-)

1. How did you know you wanted to become a flight nurse?

2. What was your nursing background before becoming a flight nurse?

3. Which specialty area do you feel you benefitted from most once you started working as a flight nurse?

4. Did you do a fly along before you entered the field? If so, how was it?

5. What advice do you have for me on my journey to becoming a flight nurse?

Specializes in Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Flight.

1. How did you know you wanted to become a flight nurse? High School- Watched Air Rescue medivac patients to the hospital from bad scene and knew i wanted to help people. went through college and came across a book called "trauma junkie" few years later here i am :)

2. What was your nursing background before becoming a flight nurse? I worked EMS, then became a nurse, ER, ICU

3. Which specialty area do you feel you benefitted from most once you started working as a flight nurse? I want to say ICU due to how many critically ill patients i deal with not just blood and guts

4. Did you do a fly along before you entered the field? If so, how was it? I did ! I did some rotor wing and that just sealed the deal :)

5. What advice do you have for me on my journey to becoming a flight nurse? Dont give up. its a competitive specialty to get into but if u want it go for it and youll get it :)

Hope this helps!

Thanks sooo much for responding!! I've read that book as well an it pretty much sealed the deal for me too! I've always been intrigued with critical care but I also enjoy the quick pace of Emergency an trauma so I figure flight nursing (rotor wing) would be the medium between the 2, plus riding in a helicopter, can't get any better than that lol
