For those of you who are off orientation and working on your own, how is it going? Did you feel ready when the time came? Is it hard now that you are on your own? Are you still asking a lot of questions? I will be off orientation soon and I am scared to death at the thought of being on my own. If anyone would like share their experiences or offer advice, I would love to hear it. Thanks!!:)

I like it. I work the same schedule as my preceptor for a month after I'm off orientation so that I still have someone to go to when I have questions, and yes, I am still asking a lot of questions! (I'm in ICU) I didn't feel ready to get off orientation but that was because I only had two weeks to orient on nights before I got off orientation. If I had stayed on days, I would have felt ready. Other nurses ask me if I need help all the time and have been offering themselves and telling me that if I need anything, to not hesitate to let them know. I like being on my own.

Thanks, Jetta1, for your reply, it dosen't look like too many others are on their own yet! Or, they didn't seem to have any trouble transitioning from precepting to being on their own. I hope I can do that well!

i have a whole thread on what its like...... lol

I was scared to death for my orientation period to end, but by the time it actually did I was sort of relieved. I had 7 different preceptors during my orientation and did both day and night shifts, I was so confused that I was just ready for it to be over. Now that I have a more predictable schedule I love it. I still ask questions, but now I am use to the nurses I work with and I know who I can go to with questions. I feel more and more confident everyday.

Hi, Im also a new RN at a transplant unit and I just finished my 4 weeks. I have 2 more weeks to go..... this week which is nights and next week. I am sooo scared but at the same time relieved because my preceptor is driving me crazy. She is a little impatient and it's hard to follow her because she goes so fast and talks super fast. How did or do you feel going in on your own? Im scared ..........:imbar hee hee hee.....

Thanks, Li

i am liking being on my own. i am lucky to have great nurses that i work with who are always available if i have a question and our RP is awesome as well. i never feel alone. i do like finally being able to develop my own routine and not follow someone elses. it is scary, but nice.
