Nurses New Nurse

Specializes in Medical Surgical.

Ok, I graduated in December, became licensed early this month, been looking for a job since then.

I finally got a email that is the most encouraging so far. The email said my application has been forwarded to the hiring manager and that they may decide to call me for an interview within the next two weeks.

Now, I am wondering if I should find out who the hiring manager is and send them a letter expressing my continued interest in this position, perhaps a paper copy of my resume?

Or would that seem to pushy?

I really want this job. I have no idea how many other candidates there are or how to even find out. For the experienced nurses out there, what would you do it you were a new grad in this economy?

Specializes in ER, Trauma, Med-Surg/Tele, LTC.

Do it! That is not too pushy. Especially in today's market. It shows initiative on your part. Just don't bombard them with multiple letters. You want to get noticed, but not as the annoying person.

Specializes in Critical Care, Education.

Try to avoid any behavior that could be perceived as "stalker-ish". These days, managers are being bombarded with communications from hopeful applicants who are trying to get noticed. It's a fine line between polite eagerness and unwelcome spam - don't go overboard.

I would advise you to focus on doing your homework so you will be the most prepared & professional candidate of all that she has interviewed. For instance, if you can, try to find what type of patients are cared for in that department? Make sure you are very familar with nursing care for those diagnoses. Ask a question that shows off your knowledge -- "Have you begun using the new supergizmo on your COPD Patients? I would love to have an opportunity to learn more about it." Review information about the hospital; how long have they been there? Are there any noteworthy events in its past? Interject this into the interview also -- "I would really enjoy working for an organization that has been serving this city for 85 years" Managers are 'champions' of their organization and will be impressed by anyone who has taken the time to learn about it also.

After the interview, send personal Thank You notes (written - on a real notecard) to the people who interviewed you. Good Luck!
