Lost and kind of insecure

Nurses New Nurse

Published

Hello!

I'm a new nurse, off orientation this week. I'm starting to feel like becoming a nurse was a mistake. I can't tell if it's because I'm in the wrong specialty or if my unit is just really poorly run. We are hemorrhaging staff. It seems like every week there is another nurse leaving, many just completing the year mark as a nurse. I'm scheduled majority of the weekends this month because of staffing issues. Our unit has been crazy busy (postpartum). I was so happy to find a job right out of school because everyone make you feel like new grads don't have options. I honestly regret not searching harder but my interview made it seem like this place had it together. I could write a novel on all the problems with our floor (L/D, SCN, PP) Now, I just feel stuck and depressed.

With all this being said, I know I'm not a quitter. I'm going to stick it out... I'm just wondering how long is enough. I've considered looking for a new job after the new year since I'll be 6 months at this job in January. Is this enough? I know they say a year is better but honestly, this place is already wearing on my soul.
