Curious as to how many shifts & hrs new grads usually work every 2 weeks? I've heard of 6, 12 hour shifts every 2 weeks (split into 3 each week; working 36 hours per week and paid for 40 per week), and I've heard of 7, 12 hour shifts every 2 weeks (split into 3 one week and 4 the next; for 84 hours every 2 weeks).

I work 36 per week, 72 hours a pay period and I'm only paid for the hours I work (I don't get paid for 40 hours). Anything above 40 hours a week is considered OT and all OT is voluntary where I work. We are required to pick up 1 shift of call a month, I'm paid $2.00/hr for 12 hours of call ($24.00) and paid 1.5 times my base if I'm called in.

Because of my rotation I am only required to work every 4th weekend - which is a Fri, Sat, Sun shift.

I work 24 hours per week, 3 eight hour shifts weekly, every other weekend, basically.

I graduated in May, began orientation in June, passed boards Aug 28th, and have been "on my own" since Aug 29th. I work 12 hour shifts (which always means 13 hrs, and more times than not is longer than that). While on orientation I worked 3 nights a week. Right after passing boards, I picked up a shift. So now I work 4 nights a wk (12 hr shifts). As a "new" nurse on our unit, I'm supposed to start out working every other weekend, whereas the others work every 3rd weekend. But, since I agreed to pick up an extra shift, I usually just work every 3rd weekend.

I graduated in mid-December and started my new job on a med surg floor first part of January. After 6 weeks of orientation, I worked 72 hours every 2 weeks, all 8 hour shifts. Now that I am almost 9 months into my job, I work 3x12 hours a week for 72. Plus overtime since the census has been unusually high this time of year.

Requirements for a new grad are the same as for any nurse on the unit: if you're full-time, it's either five 8's (40 hour minimum) or three 12's (36 hour minimum). No mandation, so when you finish work you go home. Unless they rook you into more time ;)

Everyone, new grads to old-timers, RNs to PCTs, are required to work every other weekend (Sat-Sun), their regular shifts. No rotating shifts, ever, unless there's a crisis and the hospital is going to pay you some major ka-CHING!

No one works less than an 8 hour day. 12-hour people are sometimes called off for four hours if the census is low enough; 8 hour people can be called off the entire shift for the same reason. But honestly, that hardly ever happens anymore, it seems. Guaranteed to be short SOMEWHERE in the hospital!

I got hired in June. I hired in at 32 hrs/per week, 64 per 2 week period. I work 4 eight hour shifts each week. Everyone is required to work every other weekend.

Our hospital is always at 98%-100% capacity, so it is very rare that anyone is called off. Often though, people are asked (not pressured) to stay over...In that case the pay is time and a half....we get LOTS of opportunity for OT as well.
