Conflicted with two offers

I interviewed at two places -- one being San Francisco for medsurg/telemetry and the other in Palm Springs, for a new grad residency program where I was placed in the emergency department (which is what I want). I am utterly conflicted and don't know what to do.

Kaiser job is per diem, on boarding process can take 6-8 weeks and may not even be guaranteed because of background check (which I'm expecting to fly through) as well as an assessment test (my worry, lmao). The pay is phenomenal and I wouldn't have to move. -- I am married as well.

The Palm Springs job is a guaranteed job, full time, 12 hour shifts in the unit that I want. However, the pay is drastically less and I am further away from my partner.

I told myself I would never accept the per diem job since I already have an offer on the table that is FT. However, I was not expecting that kind of pay. Plus I wouldn't have to move.

For those who have or still work per diem...are you/were you nervous about the hours not being a set thing?

Garunteed hours depend on your family financial status. Not garb teed means just that. When I was doing PRN some weeks I had to be available 7 days to make 24 hour, other weeks could get 36 or more hours. Does your household depend on your income or is your significant other able to pay all the bills and have an emergency fund? Discuss with significant other and decide what is best for the household. Also, other opportunities may become available. Do not rush into something you quickly regret. Good luck.

PRN policies can vary greatly from one facility to another. You should know going in exactly how it would work for you and it would help in advising you if you posted it as well. Also find out from other PRN nurses that are working in the department you will work what kind of hours are available and if they are getting what they need/want.

They told me minimum 4 shifts per week with 1 weekend per month. I went with the PRN job as it is close to the husband and the organization is too good to pass up (and very difficult to get into).

Now you will able to bid on FT positions as an employee which will give you the edge over anyone from outside the hospital. Also, if you find you aren't getting enough hours in the department you were hired for, check into the possibility of picking up shifts on other floors.
