I have literally applied to jobs in NY, NJ, PA, CT, DC, MD, NH, CA, NC, SC, OH, VA, FL, AZ, and TX. NOTHING. What am I doing wrong???

That sounds extremely strange. Do you have your RN license yet? If not, do you have your GN letter from your school?

Anything stand out on your background check?

What types of jobs are you applying for? What types of employers are you targeting? How flexible are you in terms of specialty, scheduling, etc.? What type of previous experience do you have? How recent was that experience? etc.

It may be that you are applying for jobs that are beyond your reach at the moment and you may have to modify your selection of jobs to apply for.

Although you are applying, are you also making follow up phone calls to Nursing Recruitment? I have found that hospitals are "too busy" to call back new grads. After submitting my resume, I made follow up phone calls every week to the point where the Nurse Recruiter knew my name and voice. I guess it worked because I received 3 interviews. Don't give up!! Most importantly be persistent :)

Good Luck,

Cherry

Your search is too broad. It sounds like you're very flexible about location but for your search to be more effective you still need to focus on one area at a time.

I have been focusing on NY/NJ for months. I only recently branched out to those other places because I have had no luck in this area.

I live in Miami and every hospital is hiring like crazy here. I got a job with Baptist Hospital- my problem was i failed my NCLEX! I hope you get a job soon! Good Luck

When you apply for jobs in far-away places ... You may be turning off the hospital recruiters by not appearing to be committed to settling in that area of the country for a long-term basis. You may be appearing to be someone who is only going to stay in the job until you can find something else closer to your home. Few places will even consider a candidate that has no intention of staying. The orientation costs to the employer are just too great.

What do you say in your cover letter? Do you give them a reason to believe that your move to their city is going to be a long-term relocation? Do you tell them of your connection with that city and your definite plans to move there? Do you tell them you will be in town arranging for housing on such-and-such a date and would like to arrange an interview/tour for that time? etc. These things are indicative of someone who is seriously relocating.

On the other hand, if you are looking for them to pay for your interview travel expenses, have no permanent connections to the community, and no apparent plans to relocate there ... it looks as if you will only be a short-term employee and therefore not very desirable as a new hire.

That's really good advice. You are probably right. However, I'm mostly looking in NY/NJ. I am definitely relocating no matter where I get a job, so that is not really an issue. In fact, it's those "far away places" that are actually calling me back. I guess what I'm really looking for is something closer, and I'm just bummed that I'm not hearing from the nearby hospitals.

why dont you reapply to the hospitals that you've applied to before. quite a handful are hiring GNs again in NJ. i start my orientation next week =)

I worked for Summa Health System a hospital system in Akron, OH they are the the best hospitals in the nation every year. They are a great place to work for. After I get my ADN in MO, I will most likely move back. They are always hiring and are a great place to work.
