2nd Hospital Interview in 9 Months

I had my 2nd hospital interview today since taking NCLEX right out of school last June. Never in my wildest dreams did think it would be this difficult to get a hospital based job when I went back to school for my RN 5 years ago. Nor did any of us I'm sure. I was very surprised by one of the statements the director made during my interview about 30 minutes in. He said he was not too worried about the new grad aspect of it because that can be learned and he doesn't mind training new grads/nurses, but rather it was the attitude/s he was trying to get a feel for, because those typically cannot be changed. I tried to answer all the questions being shot at me and did the best I could during the whole process, to express my love for nursing and patient interaction. My interview was almost twice as long as the person before me at 45 mins, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed to hear something good next week. He said he liked my persistence since I called him almost everyday, after having to cancel an interview due to illness 2 weeks prior, so I'm hoping it paid off. If not I have another interview next week, but as it usually goes this is the position I want the most.

Best of luck! I took the nclex in July and am still jobless as well so I know how frustrated you must feel... especially when the general public thinks there is an abundance of Nursing Jobs.. Hang in there!

That statement doesn't surprise me at all. I think that among NMs that are open to new grads, that's a common view. Someone who is humble and ambitious and willing to learn is more attractive than someone who has a year of experience and "knows everything" and has an attitude.

Thanks. I want this job very much so I'm praying I hear something thing early this week. Fingers crossed and double crossed! ;)

It sounds like you had a great interview!! All you can do is your best and it will pay off!

If by any chance you do not get the job and are willing to relocate... Corpus Christi, Texas has a HUGE nursing shortage... I was offered a job 30 minutes after leaving HR for a job I didn't even apply for. A huge boom going on here, with a huge shortage of nurses. Just call human resources and see what they can do for you if you are interested!

Best of luck to you!!

Thanks Shorty. Relocating is not an option for me as my husbands career is in Houston, but I appreciate the tip :) I'll post here if I actually get the job, but trying not to get too excited since I've been disappointed before.

Sounds like that manager would be a good one - great way to begin your career.

As a fellow Houstonian, I am very sad that it is taking you so long to get your career established. Please remember that it's not a reflection on you - just a consequence of downturns in the healthcare industry & dramatic increase in the number of new grads seeking those jobs.

Keep us posted on your progress.

Good luck and I hope you get that job! I know how you feel. I took the Nclex-RN in July and have yet to find a job. I live in NYC and I wish I could relocate so I can find a job. Its so tough for a new grad :(

Thanks HouTx. I also interviewed at a rehab hospital today and was one of 6 or so interviewing for 3 positions. I can honestly say one of the most difficult things is waiting for a phone call for a decision. Some don't even bother to call, but the manager today promised she would let me know one way or the other by the end of the week, so I was grateful to hear that at least.
