Nurses Entrepreneurs

Are they any other nurse tutors on this forum?

I started a nurse tutoring business early this year. I began through an online service and also have my own private students. This is a good area for nurses to explore. I work with nursing students, and those preparing for the NCLEX but I really specialize in repeat test takers. Marketing is a big challenge because I am competing with other larger companies, but as I noted I have created a little niche in focusing on those who are repeating the test more than once.

I wish that I could say to you that having my own business is easy, but you have to be prepared to work very hard. You have to be like your students and learn everything from the book because the NCLEX is based on textbook rather than practical experience. So I spend a lot of time in the textbooks, and preparing lesson plans and outlines. Although I do have all of the latest and popular review manuals, I used these as a base to develop my own questions.

Getting students in a steady stream is the goal that I am aiming for, however, as with any business it has its high points and low points. It is very gratifying to share my nursing knowledge and to help others reach their goal of becoming a professional nurse.

Initial Start up costs is very low depending on your resources. I registered as a business - you can do so as a self proprietor or LLC. Then I bought a few current review manuals, and some basic nursing texts such as fundamentals, medical-surgical nursing etc. My daughter gave me a $300.00 gift certificate to Barnes and Nobles so this helped. I have a computer with the internet, my cell phone. These are the basics, of course you will add as you go on.

I also had brochures printed, and I blog, tweet etc. it is all very interesting but very hard work. But this is an area where start up costs are minimal and you can work from at home.

Aren't there any nurses out there who are interested in this topic? I was hoping that I could get a discussion going.

I love the idea! I did pretty good with the Saunders NCLEX book and HESI book too. I like tutoring so this is awesome.

Good idea. specializing on repeat test takers is a good niche. My aunt paid $3000 for 3 month tutoring to help her pass the nclex. how are you marketing? I think Craigslist would be a good idea marketing Avenue. Good luck

What state are you in?? I'm interested in tutoring
