Why am I an ER nurse again?

Specialties Emergency

Just had the worst day today.

Coded a 50 y/o MR man for 2 hours...damn Epi...

His poor family...

Had a 48 y/o dissection...

A 46 y/o MI...

13 y/o with a new abd mass...

And just for fun...

A "mass casualty" at a local grade school...30-40 sick kids passing out...

And every person that lives in my county...I swear...

My 14 bed ER had 18-20 patients all day

My 6 bad fast track ran with 6 or 8 ER patients all day...

My waiting room NEVER had less than 15 waiting all day..

All but a handful were ER patients.

Why am I an ER nurse again?

My feet hurt

My head hurts

I feel like I was hit by a Mack truck

I cannot make another decision to save my life

Why am I an ER nurse again?

Because in the thousands of people you see in a year, you can sometimes make a difference in a few of them.

If it weren't for that, I would have left the ER a long time ago.

I very seldom see an "emergency", but the hours I spent talking in person, and on the phone to a lady recently that cold turkeyed off of Lortab after taking them for to many years was worth every second. She and her family still take time to thank me for all the help during that process. I didn't think I did much but listen, and talk, but it must have worked.

but of course............life is like a box of chocolates...you never know what you're gona get. Keeps it interesting. Sometimes, we actually DO make a difference........

thanks for the thoughts :)

i do have the next week off.

thank god.

wow...i am still tired from yesterday

i work with an awesome team...that's what got us through

but that feeling of all you are doing is treading water...

and praying that the "30 seconds" you actually have with each patient counts for something...

thanks again...

and sorry i rambled on...needed to say it somewhere..

and you all won :)

i am usually not this low...but whew...what a day...

Specializes in 6 years of ER fun, med/surg, blah, blah.

I don't know sometimes why I am in the ER too. Some days are great & you really feel like you helped someone & other days are hell. Working with good people makes a big difference, but other days make you want to be the Greet Lady at Walmart. There is so much to learn & do & limited time to do it. Took the CEN last week & missed passing by a few. Plan to retake it though.......

Specializes in Emergency Room/corrections.

why are you an ER nurse? Because the ER chose you.

Because you CAN work for two hours coding a patient without losing your focus, or losing control of your emotions. Because you can take care of a 13 yr old with an abdominal mass and make him/her feel more at ease and maybe not so afraid. Because somewhere, along the line, you have developed a command of your specialty and you know exactly what to do when a patient takes a turn for the worst, or goes into cardiac arrest right before your eyes.

I have asked myself this question many times. These are the answers I have come up with. We all share a gift. Sometimes it feels like a curse. But we go on...... I hope your vacation was a great one!

As a fellow ER nurse, you do it because:

1-you are certifibly insane

2-you are one of the very few RNs that is able to do it

3-you couldn't do it unless you were part of a great team that works together and respects each other and bonds together, something few other areas of the hospital can say.

Be proud of what you do!
