  1. We use them when we are short on techs, and they are a great asset, since they can start IVs-saves the RNs a great deal oftime. We are exploring the idea of replacing the techs with medics.
  2. Just got diagnosed with lupus. It explains a lot of symptoms that I have had for the past year. Have at times been told I was neurotic. Anyone out there that can give me some personal info? I'm still in the denial stage. Am I going to be disabled soon? How much is stress a factor in lupus - level has been high lately.
  3. One of my problems is that I work in ED and patients and families automatically think I am the doctor, despite frequently reminding them that I am not. It leads to a lot of confusion regarding their treatment.
  4. My hospital has box lunches available for patients and family (even staff when the going gets rough!). We also have coffe 24/7 in waiting rooms in the ER and ICU. Staff can get the coffee also.
  5. Nursing diagnosis is one of the most stupid things the profession ever did. If you know the patient's diagnosis, current condition, meds, and history, your care plan should already be in your brain!

  7. As a fellow ER nurse, you do it because: 1-you are certifibly insane 2-you are one of the very few RNs that is able to do it 3-you couldn't do it unless you were part of a great team that works together and respects each other and bonds together, something few other areas of the hospital can say. Be proud of what you do!

  9. As someone who also got a BA in psych and then went to nursing school, $20k is a great investment. You will be able to pay off yor entire debt much faster than you would pay off the smaller debt with any job a BA in psych would get you. On the other hand, how do you know you want to be an RN? Are you doing it just for the income? If you are, it won't work. This is something you have to love to do - you can't do it well if your heart isn't in it.

  11. This isn't directly related to your question, but as one who learned the hard way, keep in mind that the hospitals with the biggest ads and bonuses are many times the most desperate for nurses, and not good places to work. The ones that don't advertise are the ones to talk to first. And no, you can't start too early. If you are interested in a hospital, show up on the evening shift and approach nurses and ask what they think about working there.
  12. Te best one I heard was a gay man c/o "object in rectum". When the doc opened him, light hit the doc in the eye - the end of a penlight that was turned on!
  13. We use Intragale, a web self-scheduling service, and it is great. You indicate the shifts you want to work. You can indicate specific days you need off and leave a message why you need them off.
  14. Many of these CNA schools are just private companies trying to make a profit. Some nursing homes and hospitals will train you for free.
  15. We use them in the ED and they are great - no more running around trying to find people. Really good when an acute patient comes in and youn need the doc right away.
