The North American Lookey-Loo

looleyloo.jpg

The North American Lookey-Loo is a very common creature in Emergency Departments. They are somewhat shy but can be easily lured out of their holes by any sort of perceived delay in the care of their significant-other. Their method of conflict resolution is passive-aggressivity. When approached they will usually retreat in their holes with their distinctive alarm cry which sounds something like "how much longer?"

Commonly, they hover at the door of their significant other's room or near the edge of the curtain and direct their pitiful stares towards the doctor's or nurse's station.

They pose a dilemma for proponents of evolutionary theory because their behavior is, in fact, deleterious, in that it inevitably delays disposition of the patient. In fact, their behavior brings out the florid passive-aggressive nature of the powerful nurse-doctor beast. We expect, therefore, that they will select themselves out of the population. Curiously though, they do not seem to be decreasing in number as they may also be seen (in huge numbers) craning their necks out of car windows near motor vehicle accidents or crime scenes. It is therefore possible that their behavior may have an as yet undiscovered reproductive advantage.

I would like to add that the North American Lookey Loo is best avoided by never standing/sitting still in one area, and never EVER make eye contact with these creatures! These behaviors encourage the creature to come out of its lair and strike!

These creatures have also been spotted in the hallways of hospital floors... curiously peeking their heads out or for a more flagrant breed standing in the hallway, watching said patient's nurse's every move... until someone says "Can I help you?" Then they retreat to the patient's room and hit the call button to ask when the nurse will be in.

These creatures also find their way to the ICU. They attempt to peek into the rooms of other patients. They also walk by the rooms of others and stare as they walk by, just to see what could be wrong with "that patient". They also follow nurses into other pt rooms.

These creatures have also been spotted on the stepdown units and medsurg units as well.

They seem to be growing in numbers.

Oddly enough, these parasites have been spotted in the ccu. They display the same behaviors looking in other patients rooms, follwing the nurse around-especially during a code. Joy!!

Stubborn little critters, aren't they? And so annoying.

Is there a hunting season for the Lookey-Loo? If so, is there a limit? Just males? Just females? both? weight/height limits? Are there different seasons? Bow, Shotgun, rifle, muzzle loader? Anyone with info please let me know as soon as possible.

Happy Hunting.

Especially when you're running past them with a code cart and they try to stop you for blanket/pillow/water/whatever. This big red box is like a big red fire truck - it screams get outta my way!

"Excuse me ma'am. Please exit the unit using THIS door."

"But can't I just go THAT way (right past the room where a child is being resuscitated for the second time that day) so I can get my coat?"

"No, sorry. THIS way, please. I'll get someone to bring you your coat. Which one is it?"

"Oh, good. I wanna go for a smoke."

Where's my Taser?
