What are some funny C/O people have had coming into your triage area? Misspelled words too...

We had a lady come in the other night because she ate raw chicken -Claimed she didn't know it was raw.

Lots of people come in with soar throats.

We also had a mom who tried to spell diarrhea several times on the check in -Finally crossed it out and wrote S**Ts a lot.

One wkend I was working ER & the ambulance brought in a group of teenagers who'd been riding in the back of a pick-up coming home from the beach & were thrown out of the truck when they hit another vehicle. As we were cutting the bathing suit off this one chick on the backboard, she says "HEY! I paid 50 bucks for this suit!!" the ER doc said "Should've worn something else!!" :chuckle

Oh I love this one!!!! Esp. your dx!! I'm lol here!!

18 year old girl comes in drunk out of her mind. Her chief complaint, " I am dizzy and feel like I'm going to throw up." DUH

It seems like the complaints are getting dumber and dumber. I have to bite my lip when I assign myself to triage. I have a hard time keeping a straight face when people tell me the have had*****for 6 months. Do people actually think this is an emergency. And they are the ones the that complain when the patient who is having an AMI, or has cut off half their hand get into the treatment area befor the,. go figure. I cannot believe the mentality of some of these people. I would be embarassed to come to the ED. Oh the funniest- Vibrator up the you know what. Had to go to the OR -you know the everready batteries last forever LOL LOL LOL :chuckle

I have seen similar too in the UK!!!!!!!!!!!!!

A/E (UK accident & emergency)

Same senaro!! guys quote same as yours both times - different guys.

One item was a shaving brush and the other - Iv'e always wondered about - was non other than a large ripe orange???????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Female....................A gooey greeney sluggy coated pill bottle???!!!!!! Phew...phew...Gag...Gag.....Go to lab.....No growth!!!!

The version of this that I ran into in our ER was a guy who said that he was laying carpet and backed up towards a fireplace and somehow had a more than close encounter of the fireplace poker kind. Must have been VERY enthusiastic carpet laying! Ended w/ a trip to the OR too.

I am a nursing student graduating in May and I have always been interested in ER nursing. I got a kick out of all of these stories!!! :chuckle

I was wondering if you could let me know how you ended up in the ER and what you think I should do after I graduate to prepare me for ER nursing in the future, considering that they normally don't hire new grads for the ER. Thanks!!!

We had a pt come in to our ED who had been running in a race (a very popular annual race in my area). The patient stated that he was running and sh*t his pants. He continued to finish the race and came to the ED because his @ss was "on fire!".

I started working in the ER after doing Med/Surg/Tele for 9 yrs & being totally burnt!! I had no experience in ER but I had seen alot in those 9 yrs. We had recently moved & I applied at a small rural hosp. in CT and I started on Med/Surg but it bored me to tears- they offered to train me for ER- it wasn't easy- the staff was quite hostile to a non-experienced ER nurse, and there were times I went home in tears!! Let's not even talk about the rude doctors!! I did get ACLS & ATLS though, and a good yr of ER experience. We then moved to FL & the hospitals there were only too happy to hire an RN w/1 yr of ER & ACLS & ATLS! I was fearful of another bunch of crabby, bitter nurses, but they were the friendliest bunch of people I ever met!! I stayed there 5 yrs doing 3 12 hr shifts/wk, and even worked per diem at another smaller ED. After that first yr everyone else I enountered was great to work with. I learned alot, made alot of new friends, and when I left there the ER docs were happy to write me letters of reference. You'll have lots of funny stories to tell, but working in the ER has alot of sadness too- there were nights I went home & hugged my kids- after a while they knew & would say "what happened mommy?" I didn't always tell them things, and believe me, you'll see enough to understand why we joke so much about the silly complaints. So, I'd encourage you to pursue ER - it was never dull & a great learning experience! Good luck!! :)

Honestly, we did think about it one evening after flipping through the book "What's the number for 911?" :chuckle

Actually, my son's co-worker asked him just that when he was yelling for her to call 911, because he was on fire. :uhoh21:

The cause wins dumb a ER award, too. Mix THC, working at a gas station (backsplash), and a lighter. :smokin: :( :flamesonb :nono:

You would be surprised, apply directly to the ER, hospitals hire new grads!!!! The unit that I used to work for has a 3 month orientation witha preceptor, during this period you also have class time with the ER nurse educator.

I appreciate you taking the time to discuss that with me. I have even experienced in my clinicals the difference between welcoming and unwelcoming nurses. I have always had an interest in emergency nursing but it is hard as a soon to be new grad to know where to start! I do plan on starting in med/surg to get some experience even though I already feel that I won't enjoy it that much. But I guess I can't expect to get my dream job right away huh? If you have any other advise for me, you are more than welcome to share!! Thanks again!!

Specializes in Med-Surg.

I am a med-surg nurse and am LOL at these!

I love the patients who are admitted with intactable vomitting and abdominal pain. The first thing they ask for after arriving on the unit is something to eat and drink.

I love the 40 year old patients who come out to the nurses station asking to sign a "waver" because they want to go and smoke. Their admitting diagnosis is pneumonia/copd exacerbation. :rotfl:
