People to work long hours with frequent mandatory overtime. Few Holidays and weekends off. Must be able to keep massive amounts of paperwork up to date while making split second, life or death decisions.

Must be immune to verbal abuse and be able to neutralize occasional physical assaults. Must display patience, kindness, understanding and caring even when personal life is coming apart at the seams. Must show no aversion to blood, vomit, oozing infections or human body wastes.

Salary in no way commensurate's with knowledge and ability. Only those interested in dealing with depressing situations on a daily basis need to apply.

It's for this reason I dunno how nurses who've been doing this job for 20+ years keep up with it....I'm really at awe at those nurses, they really have some serious fortitude! I've only been a nurse for 2 years and am feeling the effect.....dunno what I'll look like in 20 :nurse:

I KNOW what you mean!! My mother in law has been a nurse for HOSPICE for over 20 years!!! Let me tell you, she knows how to live life and NEVER wastes a moment!!

Then there is the other side. When you make a difference in someone's life. When you are the one that notices a change of condition. When a patient or family member thanks you for your help. When you are recognized in a store by a family member or ex-patient, and told how wonderful you are. When you can feel the warm satisfaction of having done a good job. When a doctor says thank you in an honest tone of voice. When you get a really good evaluation and realize the you are a valuable person who is really important, not only to the organization, but to the world. There are so many more good things about nursing.

There are many good things about being a nurse. I have been retired for about a year and am considering PRN so that I can esperience these things again. You just don't get this stuff when you are retired!

I think part of the problem in nursing is that some people believe in this crap!
