nurses and EMT's

Specialties Emergency

I'm currently an EMT, but I'm planning to apply to a master's entry program soon. From my own experiences, some of the ER nurses are disrespectful to EMT's. Some nurses don't appreciate the care EMT's give, although limited, in the pre-hospital setting. Sure, nurses are much more skilled and have more knowledge for patient care, but they should at least be polite and professional. I've been ignored and even called "nothing but taxi drivers" and it really upsets me, but I just laugh it off and act as if they were joking, even though they weren't. I find it ironic that some of these nurses treat us like this yet they wonder why some doctors do the same to them. At least I know how it feels so that I know not to do this when I become an NP.

Your lack of respect for EMS (and Paramedics) has been shown in this and many other threads. And thanks for letting me know that YOU approve of what I think, I'll certainly sleep better now.

Your words,

"It is only through education that those in EMS will be on a more level playing field with all the other healthcare professions. Everyone of the others have known the struggles of their profession to gain recognition and respect as a profession. It is only EMS that still believes .just a uniform and another cool title is all it takes to be given respect and fee meals as part of their entitlement. "

Please explain to me how anyone can NOT read your TOTAL lack of respect for anyone in EMS, not just some?

I think that there are good nurses and bad nurses. There are good Paramedics and bad paramedics. I have had the privilege of working with some of the finest paramedics in the country and I respect them deeply. As a paramedic myself it is comparing apples and oranges for the job responsibilities. I have worked a top Trauma flight with one of the finest medical centers and I will assure you that I respect Paramedics greatly. I have also worked with some of the finest paramedics at the bedside and are very appreciative of their skills.

Like nursing there is an entry level education discrepancy that causes bickering amongst the ranks. I have found that those with the greatest criticisms are sometimes the most insecure and don't think very highly of themselves. It has been my experience that if one needs to put others down in order to make yourself better.....it a sign of insecurity and low self esteem.

I have always worked with paramedics that are a part of the "team" and each profession in turn respectful of each others skills. Lets practice that here and be respectful of each other. We can agree to disagree without being disagreeable....and we can be respectful and still voice our opinions.

And I know a handful of Paramedics that have done Excelsior.

I love EMTs, and I treat them like colleagues. Love em.

I am sorry for how you have been treated. In my regular experience with our EMTs and Paramedics, there are a couple I think of as 'just taxi drivers'. But that's because there are some under performers in every profession, including nursing. In general, we love the care our EMTs and Medics give, and are grateful to the pre-hospital work they do as well as the care we can tell they will give to those we transfer out.
