Looking for ideas for Emergency Nurses Week. We always receive mugs, pens, etc. Looking for something new and exciting for the hardest working nurses :nurse: in nursing. Any ideas. Will really appreciate this

Thanks one and all. :clown:

Although it sounds good, sound research doesn't actually support raises as increasing satisfaction or retention.

Money is important, but on many surveys money comes behind things like a safe workplace, empowerment and support of managers.

However, usually it's easier for the boss to just scratch a check or a raise to make people happy. Unfortunately, the things that make a bigger difference in satisfaction and retention aren't as easy to implement.

$2 hr raise. I am serious. If they truly appreciate us year around that would really show it. Never will happen but hey a guy can hope.

Here at my ER for emergency nursing week I am pretty sure they plan on getting rid of another RN position.

They like to celebrate this event each year (for the past 2) by cutting our staff by one spot for days and nights to "help the budget".

2 years ago I got a bunch of the Informed ER/Critical Care Pocket Guides and we raffled off 20-30 of them. For each ER Doc that put 25$ in, another book was added to the pile. The profits went to our ENA chapter (about $100 dollars).

If anyone is interested in getting these, let me know, I can get a good deal from the publisher directly.

Didn't I already suggest that? Are you trying to sell something here for your own profit?

I might want to add......this nurses hospital's media department can produce this product for much cheaper that buying from you

Well I am in Florida, on of the well known low pay states. So others might know where I come from. My facility over the last few years is/has improved in nurse recognition- in fact we have ANCC site visit for Magnet in a couple weeks. But they pay the market- so you not going to make much more anywhere else in the area. A surprise would be to jump above the heard. Though I do understand that management on a department level has little control over nurse wages.

Yeah, but in Florida you don't have to pay state income tax!

Go see how your salary compares...go to salary.com and you'll see why when you only make 50,000/year in Florida, that is the same as $70,000 in Atlanta or $80,000 in California - it's all about cost of living.

I can tell you my staff RN's here in South Carolina only make $21-22/hour or so, BUT, our property taxes are LOW, we only pay 5% state sales tax and so on and so forth.

Compare this to a RN working in New Jersey who pays $1,200/month rent for a 1 bedroom townhouse!... my MORTGAGE in South Carolina is only $500/month!!!:yeah:

I've been working on finding memorable ideas for this years' ER Nurse Week celebration too. Our facility is VERY small and is limited by financial constraints, but I want my nurses to get the recognition and appreciation they fully deserve. I am planning on having food catered in (pizza, local, whatever), a nice flower arrangement for the department, and a "fun" awards presentation from co-worker appointed nominations. I hope to find some kind of token (tote bag, name badges, etc.) of thanks to give as well.

I think giving awards will be fantastic. We always have food somehow since we celebrate monthly birthdays with cakes and food. However, now thanks to the suggestion, it would be great for the staff to select members for different awards-both serious and pleasureable, for example-Most likely to "get the IV on the first try"(child or adult), Best Pressed Scrubs, Most Dry Hands Award-need to be visualized by judges, etc. I think this will involve all the staff and increases staff participation in the week. :typing

An OB manager came up with a cheap useful idea- she laminated cards with essential doses on them and frequently used policy information for quick reference that we attached to our name badges. Very nice having emergency drug compatibilities and a little tick off list for emergency csections at out fingertips.

Thanks, that is another great idea, in fact we could make this for future nursing students, since we are growing our own.
