Hello,

I am in a part time evening RN program and just accepted a position in the ED as a technician. This is my first time working in a hospital and as a technician. I would like to read up and learn as much as I can prior to orientation.

Any books and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you so much!!

Congratulations. I think that would benefit you in your studies. You say you've never worked in a hospital. Have you been in the medical field at all?

Knowing your background will help me to understand what to recommend.

For our techs, they are expected to know how to splint, do EKGs, do wound care, take out IVs. Some draw blood, but not most. Catheters are done by our techs unless it is a suprapubic one or needs more advanced skill (like a man with prostate problems needing a Coude.)

For the most part, I think you'll get that training and understanding on the job.

Thank you. I've been a dental assistant for 20yrs. So I'm moving to a completely different realm. Quite nervous and excited at the same time.

Show off your work ethic and make them want to never let you go. :) Be sure to tell the nurses if you see abnormal vitals. I worked with techs who were great at taking vitals, but terrible about telling anyone about fever, tachycardia, etc.
