LPN in Dialysis

I'm a LPN in Ga and I am thinking of taking a job in a dialysis clinic. I was just wondering if any other LPN working in dialysis could tell me about their job duties, how much the pay is and anything that may be helpful to me.

Specializes in A myriad of specialties.

While I don't work in dialyis now, I did work in the field for nearly 5 years. I quit 3 yrs ago for a slower-paced position in a different specialty. I did like the job; I enjoyed knowing my patients well. Duties were: I was a "team leader"(i.e., one dialysis tech and myself were the "team" caring for 7 pts in the a.m. and 6 in the p.m.), setting up/tearing down the machines, assessing pts prior to and after dialysis tx(lung/heart assessments, wt, BPs, etc), determining potassium baths to be used based on standing orders, administering IV drugs, etc. I started at $13/hr and ended at $19.10/hr after nearly 5 yrs.

Hours are long(12 hrs) but go fast as you have to work fast. It's a fascinating field!

welcome to allnurses.com! i moved your post to the renal/dialysis forum for better exposure.

good luck!

I am clinic manager for a 21 station clinic in rural Georgia - I currently have 2 LPNs on staff - dialysis is one of the few areas where LPNs are utilized to their full capabilities - pay depends on location, years experience, etc....pretty much like any other job - currently $14.50 - $17.50 at my clinic - hope you join our field - good luck

Specializes in Tele, Dialysis, Med-Surg, ICU,GI.

I'm LPN in dialysis, but our set up is different. We have no dialysis techs we are it. We set up the machines, put the pts on, monitor the vitals, and do take offs. We adminster the meds, we assess the sites, do cat dressing changes. Rn do the overall assesments.

I have been a LPN in georgia for two years. I have enjoyed it. However, dialysis is very fast paced; if you up for the challenged welcome to dialysis. My duties include pt assessment, careplans, taking Dr. orders, setting up machine and tearing down; opening; administering meds etc. also reconciling charges.
