:Dhi, i know that this field is a love/hate option, but i just want to say that i am really looking forward to starting. the outpatient clinic is owned by davita....and yes i know that the techs train you.....but it seems totally legit....i was told that they teach you the technical stuff....about the machines and other technical things. and then the rn teaches you the rn stuff.....for all the people who have complained about techs being rude, and not helping....maybe it is because you think you are better than they are....i am very excited to learn from these very important people in our profession! i just felt the need to say this....no one person is better than anyone else. anyways please pray for me as i start my new career on tuesday....thanks to all....

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Good luck....yes indeed dialysis is either love or hate - one of the few nursing specialties where there is no middle ground. I sure hope you love it. It is not a problem (at least in my mind) be trained in the technical aspects of dialysis care by the tech - they are the ones at the chairside. Most dialysis nurses who stick with it respect and work together with their techs. Few nurses are rude and/or think they are better than the techs - if they do - they don't last long.

Take care.

Specializes in dialysis (mostly) some L&D, Rehab/LTC.

LOL there are so many things I want to say...but...I'll just say Good Luck!:nurse:

Specializes in hemo and peritoneal dialysis.

Even though we only use RNs in out acute unit, everyone starts out on a tech level and works up through LPN level, not taking any call, then to the RN level, able to work independently. Learn as much as you can from the bottom up, and don't ever be afraid to ask WHY. It will pay off later. There are some great techs out there who still teach some of the RNs a thing or two.
