Ever had your coffee confiscated?

Dr Joel Topf posted on his blog today how he is "going outlaw" on the subject of coffee drinking. As someone who has had his coffee seized by an infection control witch I am in total agreement but would like to keep my job. Any opinions?

Hahaha. I think for people like us that are constantly giving up things like bathroom breaks, timely lunches and breaks, the freedoms to drink 8 glasses of water a day, the time to take a personal call, and never being allowed to leave early or show up late, please, DONT TAKE OUR COFFEE!!!! It's all we have left!!

But seriously, who takes their coffee into patient care areas? That seems seriously unprofessional. I mean, when I work in the clinic I keep my coffee on my desk, and I *do* see patients in my office, but I would never think to take my coffee into an actual exam room. When I work L&D, my coffee stays at the nursing station, always.

Maybe it's different in other specialties?

A lot of infection control people say that even the nurses station is a no. That's considered a patient care area. I've even heard some people say it's "disgusting" to chart and drink coffee at the nurses station... Not really sure I agree that it's so gross. There's a lid on it and my hands are clean....

At my old unit, we had our coffee/drinks on a cart in the hallway outside of the RN station, and next to the staff lounge.

It worked. Mostly.
