It seems to me new grads seem to get ICU jobs more and more nowadays. Is it because new grads can be molded a certain way a seasoned nurse cannot be?

I wish this was true! I am a new grad and I worked very hard to get hired in ICU.

I think it depends on the state. In New York its quite impossible!

New York is a very tough place to get a home health job, let alone something in a ICU job.

In CT they don't normally hire new grads in ICU's.

Orlando tend to hire lots of new nurses in the ICU.

It's cheaper.

End of story.

Hospitals are becoming more interested in hiring new grads in icu's for several reasons. A new grad is not caught up in old beliefs or previous learned practices. They can be molded to the philosophies of the hospital in which they are hired. Bottom line they don't come with bad habits or old baggage

And they're all probably BSNs (hint hint - think MAGNET).

Also cheaper.

Money. 3 new grads just got hired to my ICU. I was told by my manager that there is a government program right now that pays HALF of a new grad's salary while on orientation.

That's a lot of money saved paying an experienced nurse for the same time period. Also as others have mentioned, new grads make less money in general.

well just read the thread "Sooo, I quit" and there's another recent thread by a former military medic, and you'll have your answer.

New nurses -except for the men who say I'm outta here- can be intimidated into taking three unstable patients.

I'm getting my masters.I've been a critical care nurse all my career. What is the most lucrative area for a nurse with masters.I was thinking education with an administrative certificate.I'm in virginia don't know if NP is worth it. Appreciate any suggestions.ty
