GREAT Interview

Specialties Correctional

Published

Well I just smoked an interview like it was a cheap cigar due in LARGE part to what I have read here.

They asked me the standard hypothetical questions that revolved around correctional nursing mostly. My reply was almost always,

"Not having read your policy letters yet, my rule of thumb is always 1. Inmate security. 2. Staff safety 3. Scene Analysis"

They were shocked and amazed! I further went on to tell them in my ramblings that I felt you had better have strong assessment skills, know the policies, then do not be afraid to act. Lastly I made it a point to tell them I felt that "You need to do the right thing while you do it right"

They offered me the job on the spot. Now to be honest is does not hurt that they are down 3 nurses at the moment and the HSA was down the street from me when we were both in the Army. We have both since retired. Needless to say I got a great offer from CMS.

Job seekers out there. DO YOUR HOMEWORK! Read about the place. Know their values.

In my short two years of nursing here is what I have learned:

There is no nursing shortage, there is however a shortage of good nurses.

The lab is not your friend.

The pharmacy is not your friend.

If you really need something, it is behind a locked door, and the person with the key is there from 7-3 M-F

Way to go! I didn't get hired on the spot but I did just get hired too. This will be my first nursing job and I am so excited! Hope things go well for you!

Congratulations to you both. Make sure you remember all those things when you have a foot in the door....for many it isn't what you expect, and don't like it....the rest of it know it ROCKS!!!! Congrats!

Congrats! I hope you enjoy your work with our challenging patient population. You have a opportunity to make a difference. Go for it!

Do I need to sound like the person posting this thread to get a job offer on the spot?

Specializes in Hospice, corrections, psychiatry, rehab, LTC.

Understand that most employers don't offer jobs on the spot. In our case we do interviews (sometimes for two days), and there is a process that must be followed in order to hire someone. We are a state agency with all the bureaucracy and red tape that goes along with it.

To answer your question about the interview, the response in the original post was excellent.

Thank You Orca!

I'm ready for an interview with all the insight shared in this website. I hope I get an interview soon. I know the correctional facility by my house was using a registry for their CNAs. I'm keeping my fingers crossed to get a CNA position there.
