Online Courses

I have a question about online courses. When you apply to a nursing school what online courses would be excepted? What are some of the good online colleges? Also, is it better to just take the classes at a school or is it better to take classes online? I would like to know because I have to take pre-requisites before applying to Nursing School and if I could take some of my pre-reqs online I would like too. If anyone can help, it is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hello - Maybe I can answer your question for you as Regi helped me and I am currently taking an online class at Clovis. I am also signed up for two more in the spring. Yes you will have to take the Accuplacer Test if you want to take Math or English classes. It was a real pain for me to find someone that they would approve as a proctor. Once I took the Tests, I was very high in English and could take the English courses online. But for math, I was low (which I knew since I have been out of school for many, many years!) The problem then was that Clovis did not offer the Math level that I needed online. So I have been taking an online Math course through CNM.edu, another college in New Mexico. This works out pretty well as they offered the level that I needed and I took it through their "SAGE" program so it only cost me $160, since it is a non-credit course. I am taking the next level in the spring at CNM.edu as well, since it is cheaper. The person who heads up the online courses, is a wonderful person to work with and she was a great help to me to get me started.

Whatever you do, don't want until the last minute to sign up as it does take time, even online, for them to answer emails and questions. You can "apply" to both of the colleges at no cost, so if you are even thinking about taking a class, then sign up now so that paperwork is done. Then when you are ready to sign up you can just do it right online.

Clovis has a great deal - you can do 6 credits for the price of 3. I just signed up for my two classes and the total was $222.00. Can't beat that!

Regi - How are your nursing and your CLovis classes going??

Good Luck -

Sandy

Check out www.charteroak.edu CT has its very own accredited "virtual" college. Their courses are reasonably priced and accepted at all CT state colleges as well as others. It is a great resource that is overlooked because they don't advertise. You do labs by following along at home, you have to procure some supplies. I haven't actually done any of the labs, so all I know is from the course descriptions.

CT does little to assist LPN's to become RN's. By the time you've done your 15 months of LPN, your pre-req's and bridge requirements - you might as well have gone to a four year college. It is not that they are behind the times, they are trying to maintain an artificial shortage of RN's in a state with many colleges. For example, they use as an excuse for not expanding the Community College Nursing Programs that there is a lack of instructors. Yet, all the new private LPN programs have been able to obtain MSN level directors as well as qualified BSN and MSN instructors.

I have looked into Charter Oak and they charge $186.00 PER CREDIT for an online course, whereas at Clovis you can take 6 credits for $222. That is a big difference and is the only reason that I am not taking courses in Ct. Even at the Community Colleges, it is $397 for a 3 credit course.

I would think that online courses would be cheaper, but they're not.

The CC's in CT have a great selection on online courses. There's also Charter Oak State College here in CT, completely online. Make sure you check with your school to verify they will accept the courses before you invest any money. Also, online learning is not easier than classroom and is not for everyone. I have taken quite a few online courses and have done well in them but they simply don't compare to being in a classroom and learning the traditional way. I can't imagine taking a lab science online. How does that work?

Good luck to you!!

hey all you clovis experts.

does anyone know if the clovis psychology will transfer to ct cc or bhson? i registered for general psychology then i tripped over this thread again and thought i could really save some money if they accept the intro to physiology at clovis.

also i'm looking for a short math class to take online. i took and passed the teas but i know i could do much better so i am taking it. i did the worst in math so i was looking for a class or tutorial to help boost my score in that area.

ok thanks.

thanks for all the help everyone. I was just looking at regular gen eds really so I will probably do clovis once I get confirmation. It wont take me 4 years to do so like Thornbird said, you just have to plan. I am also aware of charter oak, CT league of nursing and BHSN all mention that their bridge program IS FROM charter oak.

Thornbird, I respect your willingness to give us the bad side to being an lpn. However for some of us who have certain needs and want the experience and don't need to work in a hospital but rather work in LTC, it is ok to go thru LPN school for now.

I don't plan on living in CT all my life, I'm not even from here and would rather be in a city witn more minorities and culture. But for now, I like some programs and CT is not bad (just remember i came from a sunny state lol). We LPNs just have to hope our experience wont be the way you describe, as its a deterenent to those who aspire to make these decisions in life.

LPN schools if 15 months, i can get 3 or 4 gen eds out before i start lpn school. After that its just taking psych and a&P a semester and child psych and a&p II the next semester. That would be roughly a year. Add lpn w/ that and its not so bad considering you can get into the bridge program and sit in the 2nd year of RN and finish. You can also go to St. Vincent. Its not easy to get in but its not impossible.

People starting out from scratch to finish an RN is fine but for those who need to work to support a family, I'll take the LPN course and get my experience first. Learning as an RN w/ no real experience doesnt make me better than an LPN w/ 3 or even 1 years experience.

That is my take and so far I will go that route. Wish all of you well, with this economy things will always be tough but just go for the program tha enables you to do what you like.

I come from a family of lawyers, I can be a damn good one as well but I choose this because I wont be happy in the legal system. Its hardly "just".

thanks Sandy for answering the questions, things got crazy here.

Yes, LPN school is going good, just really busy with papers, reading, exams, and finally clinicals.... I ended up dropping two classes from Clovis because of the work load. They were REALLY great about it... the professsors extended all my deadlines when I told them about LPN school, but I still could not keep up. I kept APII because we were doing the same systems in class, so it was not that bad of a stretch... but the computer alpp class was not hard, just time consuming. Maybe this summer i might take a couple of classes if I am not burned out, otherwise just wait until I finish LPN.

Kudos to you Sandy for taking the information and going further with it... Let us know about CNM. How is their online math??

about psych, get the syllabus from clovis, (some of them are online) and see if the school you want will take it. Actually most schools will take it from another community college as long its the same title. but just check to make sure. and you cant beat the price. anyway, back to the books, keep me in your prayers.

Regi

Hey - I am taking Psych at Clovis next semester as well as English 102. Yes both the state LPN course and the CC's take Clovis' credits. I printed and kept the email that Gateway sent to me with the answer to that question, just in case there was a question.

I, too, would like to take the state runLPN course first and then take the bridge to the RN classes at the Comm. College. I need to do it this way, even though it will take me a bit longer. Then I can work and take the RN classes too. Hoping to get into the next year's day LPN class.

Regi, glad things are going well. Would love details on the LPN class.

I am also going to take the math through CNM.edu for $160. through adult ed (SAGE program there.) This will bring me up to the level I need to be to take the required math class for the LPN or RN programs.

hey regi - i really like the online math class at cnm.edu. very good book, and very good pace. and he has been great. hope he teaches part 2 next semester.

i take alot of inspiration from you - you helped me so much when searching for online classes! keep going regi!

mod note, please do not post instructor names as per terms of service

Hi CTstudent,

Thanks for helping me a while back. Do you mind sending a PM regarding Gateway and who your contact was? They sent me an e-mail and said I have to submit an unofficial transcript....lazy answer in my opinion.

I also talked to Housatonic since they work with BHSN. I was set on BHSN or St. Vincent's but Housatonic's answer to Clovis and their policy to talk to you in general has turned me off.

They WILL NOT accept Clovis math and science due to it being online. I understand science but math???? You can't even leave a message w/ the nursing director there. You have to show up at the college and hope to have an appt w/ her to get your questions answered. Silly...

Also I not only passed but aced my college algebra clep exam. It was a year ago so i'm going to brush up before my accuplacer test. But when i submitted this to Housatonic, they said college algebra clep will give me only intermediate algebra with them. I was like "WHAT????" Heck i only got one wrong answer lol.

So any help on who you talked to on Gateway will help. I will try to get them to put it in writing.

I really really want to thank you guys for helping me w/ clovis. I have not been in school for 11 years and took the accuplacer test before x'mas and i totally aced it due to all of you guys telling me to prepare and practice and practice.

on all the grammar stuff I was told perfect is 120 same w/ elementary algebra and i got 119.1 on all. Then for college math we only needed 70 to get to college algebra. I hit 98 and can go to math 111, stats 213.

because of all of your support and advice i still took the lower college algebra math 110. Lovin it totally and i'm just so elated i scored so high despite being so worried if i even remember all this stuff. It was a great x'mas present from all of you who helped me not to take it all lightly and it paid off.

thank you so very very much and i wish you all the best in your endeavors. Anyone who needs to ask for help on math etc let me know.
