What is the typical work schedule in nursing homes?

Hey, I'm supposed to start CNA classes soon (the 12th) and I had a couple of questions. I plan to apply to nursing homes after I get certified, and I was curious about working in one. What is the typical work schedule -- I know the shifts are usually 7-3, 3-11, and 11-7, but how often/how many days a week do you work, and how many off days do you get? And do most nursing homes offer both full time and part time shifts, or just full time?

I work 12 hour shifts and I'm part time. I only work 3 days a week. Depending on your state you can work before you are certified. My state allows individuals to work 180 days I think and then they are required to take the state board. So toward the end of your classes you could start working. Just check with your state.

Most nursing homes have full and part time hours. I would suggest assisted living facilites...if they have them in your area. They tend to pay a little better and the work load is not quite so bad.

I've found that ALFs pay is very low, rivaling McDonald's pay rate, but the atmosphere is much more calm. At my facility full time is considered four or five days a week for 8 hour shifts part time is at least 2 days a week and per diem is what you want it to be. You're supposed to have 2 consecutive days off unless you specifically make your schedule to where that is impossible. I don't know anywhere that doesn't offer both full and part time.

At the place I work, they offer anywhere from 8-24/hours non-benefitted part-time, 32 hours benefitted part-time, and 40 hours benefitted full time. I'm currently at 32 hours plus every other weekend, where I work three consecutive nights in a row and then my fourth later in the week. Sometimes, though, when the weekend falls into the middle, I will work three consecutive, have a night or two off, and then an additional two consecutive on because of how the weekend falls.
