Just wanted to say to all Cna's...

Nursing Students CNA/MA

If you hate being a Cna the best thing to do is try working at a different facility.I am a new cna I got my certification 4 months ago.I got hired at a job a week after becoming certified, the facility I was at was so outdated and the load there was so heavy. They paid minimum wage which I could not wrap my head around.I hated the job it made me rethink why I ever decided to become a cna in the first place.I did not quit the job I stayed until I found me a new job two months later.I loveeeeeee this facility and enjoy going to work everyday.Of course being a cna is a stepping stone for me I am going to apply to Nursing school but I just wanted to let Cna's know that some facilities are better than others.Don't let one bad situation determine you entire outlook on what it is like to be a Cna.The career is very rewarding:):):)(just wanted to point that out)

Specializes in CNA/ ALF & Hospital.

Thanks hun! we are in need of MUCH NEEDED encouragement that we do not often get so that we can look forward to clocking in.

You're welcome!!!and Thank you!!

Specializes in Long term care.

I agree, at some places you just don't have the incentive to even do the job ((minimum wage for a CNA is ridiculous, personally I think we deserve $15-18/hr + benefits but to get $7.25 w/o benefits is horrid and I wouldn't want to clock in either it's good you found something a little more appealing)) and thanks for being so encouraging.

You're very welcome!!!

I appreciate this. I dislike my job.....not because I don't like the work -- I love it!! I adore the people I take care of, but I don't like my employer -- a LTC facility. They give us propaganda in the beginning of our employment that the nursing hours per resident is higher than state's standard.....in which case the state's standard must be pretty damn low. The workload is insane and doesn't allow a conscientious CNA the time it takes to give really good personalized care. I've only been at this employer for 4 months and already I'm scouring the ads for a better place to work.

Specializes in PACU, LTC, Med-Surg, Telemetry, Psych.

Yeah, my posts (and many others) get a bit full of the CNA angst from time to time. At least I am not as bad as some of the IT guys on dice.com or the COTAs on the indeed.com job boards I read through. There are things many of us like about the job.

But, I would like to add one other thing to your excellent advice:

CNA is more than LTC. CNA can do psych wards (which I love), clinics (rare, but possible), hospitals, patient transport (great for being rid of nasty LTC families), home health, sitting and 1:1s, be a supervisor, work ER (especially with EMT and CNA), do restorative (with good work recommendations, luck, and knowing folks), pediatrics, and many more depending on state.

If LTC does not work out, something else may. I do (and the other long time posters) rightfully go off on the garbage many of these dump LTCs put out. But, I have worked at some wonderful ones, as well.

I NEEDED to read this!!! Thanks for the motivation and congrats on your new job!!!! :yeah::nurse:

Specializes in geriatrics, dementia, ortho.

I second this! I'm working in LTC, and have been at 3 different facilities (plus home health) in the last year. I loved home care but couldn't get it full time, so I supplemented with assisted living PT. Now I'm just in a dementia care facility full time and I LOVE it! There ARE good jobs out there, and every bad one is a learning experience to help you know what to look for and avoid during your next job hunt. Hang in there, newbies!

Thank you guys for taking out the time to read my post.I just don't want people to think that being a CNA is the worst job you can have. Its a very rewarding job you just have to find the right facility.
