I have been avidly searching for a job for about 6 months. I have had several phone interviews, that were duds because they specifically asked if I am in school-- and the answer is yes. I have had a few interviews, the last one I blew because I said in 5 years I want to have my BSN. All the jobs have been for PCT or clinic MA.

Does anyone want to hear the truth anymore, or just that you plan to do bottom of the line work for the rest of your life? I find it extremely hard to lie, even though it appears I am selling myself short.

I would never lie about that. Most cnas I know eventually want to become nurses. I don't think that's a surprise to any employer. Also I would never want to work for anyone who doesn't support education and advancement.

Thank you! I feel the exact same way. I keep telling myself these hospitals aren't worth working for if they don't believe in a better me.

Everywhere says they want someone who is continuing their education, but I haven't found a place that meant it.

Pretty soon I have an interview for a PRN position, so hopefully that will change my outlook.

While they mouth the words they don't mean it all they seen in another year or so you will be leaving and their "investment" in you leaving with you. I would say, If asked, that you want to go to school but you aren't sure for what.

Yes, but I already have a Bachelors in Criminal Justice (grad May 2013- knew it was a mistake did it for various reasons, but wanted to finish program). So how do I address that? "Yes, I have a BSCJ but have no desire to work in that field. This area doesn't have a market for my minor. I love working with people, and feel that a hospital setting is where I thrive, and can grow from

a Tech to the go to Tech in times of need." ????

Also, we are a military family. I'm a Vet and my husband is Active Duty. Both factors are supposed to mean I am steps ahead of others in the job line. I have realized it makes me steps behind. I now know to clarify that yes we just moved her, but this area will be our permanent home.

I would not lie to a potential employer, but I do believe in "fluffing" up your resume-make yourself look desirable. Include nursing school, your military experience, customer service experience, etc. When an employer asks where you want to be in 5 years, don't just say you want to be a nurse, say you want to be a nurse at THEIR hospital. Make them feel like you are an asset and down the line, one of their nurses. Look up the hospital/clinic and bring up some facts..."I see your company has won numerous awards for patient and employee satisfaction, I would love to be a nurse here after I graduate!"

PRN or part time is good if your in school. Hospitals are more accommodating for nursing students; MA's at a clinic don't usually have flexible school hours. I have worked as a MA, and am now a PCT at a hospital while I finish school.

I think you mean well, but maybe are not coming across that way in your interviews. Good luck :-)
