Interested in becoming a CNA

Hi guys!

I had a quick question. I am interested in becoming a CNA so I can start getting some experience. My question does a CNA school need to be accredited? They have a four month one at my local JC but currently I wouldn't be able to get in cause it is wait listed and I do not want to wait till January and possibly take a course that's less than four months. I had a co-worker who did an ROP one and was cheaper. What's the difference? And If it does have to be accredited, what do I look for or should I call each school and ask if it's accredited? I want it to count for when I do apply to nursing schools. I really would appreciate the responses, I don't know how to go about this.

It should be accredited. I believe it is he requirement to sit for the NNAAP. You can visit the website of your states board of nursing. A lot of states will have a tab for CNA education programs. If you are unable to locate it there, some states provide information through the dept. of health or the dept. of education.

Different programs vary in length, although your state typically mandate a required amount of theory hours. A 4 month program could meet twice a week whereas a shorter length program may meet daily.

I don't know about accreditation. The most important thing to check is whether the program is approved by your state board of nursing. I did a very quick private program that as far as I know holds no accreditation, but is listed on the BON website and I had no problem getting certified and have been working as a CNA for almost three years.

I tried looking for CNA programs I. The BON website, but I couldn't find it anywhere??? Could you tell me where it is exactly?

Totally depends on your state. Here in Florida you don't even need to attend a program. You can just challenge the test.
