frustrated CNA

Nursing Students CNA/MA

I think I'm entering a phase of burn out. My job description at my hospital denotes me to either be a floor CNA juggling patients on whatever floor I'm assigned to( I'm a full time float) or I'm assigned to be a sitter with some baker act or I'm assigned to work as a mental health tech on one of our numerous psychiatric lock down units.

Lately the sort of patients I'm assigned to is these unruly psychotic folks who isn't managed correctly(pharmacological or other wise) and I'm stuck being with someone who can and will assault me anytime..... I'm so over being punched------ last week I got kicked in the eye.

I went to school to be a nursing assistant NOT a security guard or a punching bag. God I'm over this job.

I graduate nursing school in six months. Sigh it can't come fast enough.

Signed,

I'd stick it out 6 more months! If it were a year left of nursing school I would ask why not work as a hospital tech? Good luck!

I wish I had a clock to speed up the hands of time like Angelina Jolie in that one movie.

you might be graduating nursing school soon...but be warned, there will be times you are still sitting! the nurses at our hospital have to sit when there arent enough aids. i feel you on the sitting though, it gets old REAL quick.

Oh Jesus :(

yeah...most if not all nurses still have to do a lot of hands on work like this..i am personally tired of sitting..i like sitting with bipap patients, but oh GOD i hate sitting with the ones who are detoxing or who are just nasty mean people. i had this one girl throw a damn box knife at me because she was mad at her sister..why she had a box knife was a really good question! it will get easier though, you can do it!

Thank You for that. I'm glad someone understands what I go through

its rough. a lot of people think sitting is just kicking back and relaxing..and it CAN be, sometimes. most of the time, no. some of these people make me want to jump out the window :yeah: i would try and get some time away from that if possible..i work through an agency, so if i get sick of it, i take off for a few days so i dont go postal!

Seriously lol its just frustrating having to be with someone who is detoxing or just a plain a$$hole.

Sighs I remember these days. It's almost over tho, but something needs to be done about your safety. I've been a sitter before I've had great patients and I've had patients that I was sooo glad to get away from!

My first year of being a CNA, I got floated down to the ER to sit with 8 psychotic patients. It was a horrible experience. Since then I have had to sit with more. I have been punched, slapped, and bit.

I am now in school to do a TOTALLY different profession. The medical field is NOT for me, especially not the CNA side.

First of all, one thing I have noticed is...healthcare is a business and it IS NOT ABOUT THE PATIENT. The patients are CUSTOMERS and the hospital administrators could care less about them. If they did, they would hire more staff.

Sitting with 8 psychotic patients should be ILLEGAL. It is unfair to the patients and it is unfair to the staff member who has to do it. It is truly not a safe environment and I do not have the time to be fired or lose my certification over stuff such as this.

I have gotten threatened and after that...I said to myself...this patient can do whatever the hell they want to do because I am NOT about to get beat up. It took 3 secrurity guards and one male nurse to hold her down. And she was going to attack me. No. Im not doing it anymore. I would rather flip burgers.

In all honesty, if you are going to have someone sit with psychotic patients for 12 hours, at least do a routine to switch the tech out. It is a very frustration position to be in. It is not good. But hey...to the hospital we are only numbers and the patients are "customers"...right...okay.

I start my new job in two weeks and I will NEVER look back.

Really? Or admin at our hospital would flip out if you had a 25/hr nurse on a sitting assignment. That's wasting money. At our hospital it's all contracted out. Even the Pcas don't do it.
