I turned down one facility to work at another but im worried. I was told that a prn position was open and that a full time and part time would come up soon. I dont want to quit my non-healthcare job and then wait weeks or months before i get hours. What should i do?

There is just no way for us to know what it will be like. I work a casual job, when I'm not in school, but I get full time hours. There were 2 months when I first started that I didn't get enough hours though, so I mean it happens. Did you ask how many hours they expect you to get? Do you know when vacation hours have to be used by? For example it is very busy for casuals when all the positioned staff is using their vacation time that is left over, before the end of March.

1. Keep your non-healthcare job while accepting the PRN CNA position.

2. Work the PRN CNA position at least once per pay period to keep your foot in the door.

3. When a full-time CNA position eventually becomes available, apply for it.

so is a prn a set of number of hours or what?

No. PRN means 'as needed.' You give the scheduler your availability and tell them when you want to work. You can pick up one shift a week, once every two weeks, once a month, etc. You work whenever you want to work as long as they have a need for you to work.

Many PRN workers have real full-time jobs. The PRN gig is their second job.

Yes, you work whenever you're available. If you want to work every Friday, let the scheduler at the PRN job know. If you want to work every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, let the scheduler at the PRN job know.

What shifts do you notice need help the most?
