CNA exam in New York

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hey everyone,

I'm in my first semester of an ASN program, and I was wondering at what point, if any in the program I can take the CNA exam because I want to be a CNA in a nursing home rather than a student nurse aide at the hospital, but in order to do that, you need to be certified which I'm quite unfortunately not.

Anyone know? I live and go to school in New York.

From what I understand before you can get your certification you have to be in a state approved CNA training class and do your 30 hours of clinical. You may want to ask your ASN instructor if for advice. I'm in NY. Good Luck.:D

Darn!

I have absolutely no way of doing a program! There are literally only 2 available where I live...and one is only available to high school students, and the other wouldn't accept me because the only time I'm free to do it is the summer since I go to school full time, and it's a 6 week course, so I wouldn't end up working for them for very long.

I guess I'll be stuck working in a hospital if I want a nursing job as a student

I prefer working in a hospital compared to a nursing home but it's an individual choice.

How about checking with some nursing homes in your area and see what they require? Maybe they would let you work there with a semester or two under your belt or maybe volunteer and they will train you and let you work there without being certified. It's worth a shot.

I have no desire to work in a hospital. I never have.

I have checked into all of the nursing homes where I live, and they all require you to be certified unless you're only doing non clinical stuff.
