I'm interested in getting CNA certification. What is the program's course of study, what type of material does one need to know? Sure there any books I can read now to learn more?

In class you will learn how to care for mostly the elderly. You will learn about:

dementia

how to bathe someone

change briefs

Skin care (i.e avoiding bed sores)

Lifting and transferring a person (from bed to chair, etc..)

residents rights, abuse, neglect etc...

taking vital signs

and how to assist with all the needs a person may need help with in daily life and much more.

As far as books to read... I sugguest reading about various illness such as Parkinson's, Alzheimers, Huntington's, diabetes mellitus and so forth. These are things that you will deal with as a CNA but may not learn in a CNA class. Being familiar with these illness will help you to understand and help your future residents.

Course Description

This is a nursing assistant preparation class.

Students are required to take 180 hours of class over one semester which includes: lectures, lab, and clinical work.

A usual semester will require one 3-hr lecture, one 3-hr lab and one 6-hr clinical per week

The lecture is also offered online

Upon successful completion of this course, the student will be awarded a Certificate of Completion and will then be eligible to apply for state certification by examination.Personal Profile

Yikes, in our school it's 90 hours total...

My school requires an entire semester, ugh. However it's way cheaper than one of the private companies who offers the training for $2K for an accelerated 30 day course. The base price at my jc is $1200 which includes fingerprinting, CPR certification, immunizations, etc. I plan to buy used books and shop the thrift stores/Craigslist for scrubs.

For advance reading material find out what book you will using and then go to your local library and see if they have the same or a similar book. Even an earlier edition of the same book will give you a head start. If you're interested I can see if I have some reading material.
