Clinical skills...advice pls

For the Prometric clinical test:

Should I perform these safety measures (raise the bed, raise 1 side rail, and lock the wheels) for the following procedures: emptying urinary drainage, denture care, and brushing real teeth?

Ask yourself, why raise the bed for emptying a drainage bag or for cleaning dentures....where are you and what do you do with both skills....as for brushing teeth, unless you want an aching back, raise the bed to a comfortable height for you to work with....you always check bed rails and brakes with every skill.

I don't really see the logic in raising the bed when I'm emptying the urinary drainage bag, and if the bed is at the lowest position...why should I put 1 side rail up?

As for brushing teeth, I can see why I should elevate the bed.

Side rail is for safety.....safety is one of your top concerns

Side rail is for safety.....safety is one of your top concerns

Would I need to raise both side rails up when I get my supplies or when I'm near the sink?

This is for testing.....when you leave the resident....bed down, side rail up, call light available , breaks on....testing is different than real world

Ok thx for the advice...However, my instructor taught me a different way....(1 side rail up when leaving the resident because 2 side rails up is considered a restraint).

In the real world there is usually one rail, the beds are against the walls. Heck we would put a pillow under the mattress to not let the resident fall out, and they did a lot. One of the residents died the next day after a fall like that. Did your instructor say only one rail up with the bed in the center of the room? Cause why would you only have one rail up and the other down and the resident could fall out the other side. Do you have a test study book? Have you taken your final? Cause our final was the pro metric exam

I'm preparing for the CNA exam this month. I can follow the guidelines in the book or study the handout that was given in class but some points are not clear so i have to figure it out.

In real life, it would be two rails in a hospital. When I worked LTC, my state changed the rules and said we couldn't have any rails whatsoever, saying they were a restraint. I now work in a hospital and we use both rails.

two side rails up all 4 is considered a restraint, bed in lowest position, whenever possible. to empty a foley just squat down and lift up the bag and pour it.

We use the guide rails only, not all four unless there is an order for all four.
