On Call position for LTC, anyone start employment this way?

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Anyone start as an On Call for LTC facility? Is it at all desirable to take this type of position?

I interviewed for full time CNA, PM shift position and was told they may have that filled but have on call available.

She did say the on calls usually work 3 or more shifts per week.

I know I should do a search on this website but my brain is about to explode; we are remodeling the house.

Thank you

As long as you get a decent amount of training I think it should be fine. 3 shifts per week sounds alright, and turnover is usually high enough in these places that you can get a regular spot pretty quickly.

I would grab it! I interviewed 20 days ago for a "care manager" which was listed as a non-certified position. Since I was not ready to challenge the state boards, I went ahead and tried for it. I got called to the first interview, and just yesterday got called for the second interview and it went very well. I should know something in two weeks or so. By then I will have signed up for the state boards.

Anyway, what was interesting is that there were many folks there for cna positions and only me there for the care manager! That looked good to me. The second interview said that they would also train me for Med-Tech on the job, if I wanted to. Of course I said "great!" I then mentioned that I had been studying to take the cna test, so felt I would be comfortable with the ADL's. The care managers do most of the adl's and the cna's work in the skilled nursing part of the ALF.

Take what you can and as others have said, there will be openings and they hire from within frequently.

I forgot to mention, the position is for 2nd shift (2 to 10) with 2 weekends a month. It is exactly what I wanted. Say a prayer for me, please!

Good luck!

I haven't been called back. As it turns out now is not the best time for me to make a job change. Recent family health issues and needing to take time off are not what a new employer wants to see. At least in home care I have more schedule flexibility.

Eventually I'm going to get a LTC job to fulfill my desire to practice all the skills I learned on a daily basis.
