About to start applying for CNA job!!!

Nursing Students CNA/MA

Hey Everyone!

I'm almost finished with my CNA class and will take the state exam next Saturday and plan to start looking for a job immediately after that so I had a few questions for those that have done this before.....

Did you guys submit a resume with your application? I know now a lot of places are having people apply online so how does that work, just bring the resume into the facility to show you're interested?

Also, how does the PRN schedule work? is it when people call out you can go in and cover for them or the facility calls you when they need you? or what?

And do you think I should go for a part time or full time position if I am going to be taking a class during the summer that would be Mon and Wed nights for 4 hours each night...I'm not sure if I should commit to full time when I will have to go to school....

Any advice would be appreciated and I am very excited and nervous to start working as a CNA!! :uhoh21::D

When I apply for jobs, I apply online, and then follow up with a phone call 5 business days later. If/when asked to come in for an interview, I bring my resume then, to leave with the interviewer.

PRN at my hospital means you make your own schedule. You can put down as many shifts as you want, and can work part time or full time. PRN are the first to get cancelled, though, if patient census is low. And PRN at my facility don't qualify for any benefits.

As for full or part time, that's really going to depend on the facility and your own comfort with the workload. If you're going to work 12 hour shifts, you usually only need to work 3 shifts a week to be full-time. You could easily do those on weekends, and it wouldn't interfere with your school. Or if you're working 8 hour shifts, you'll probably be working 5 days a week, so you'd have to see if your employer would let you work 7a-3p, or if they need you 3p-11p, you could see about working Tues, Thurs, Fri, Sat, Sun. So you'd be free for your class Mon and Wed nights. A full-time work schedule is totally doable with 1 class. It's totally doable with a full-time class, load, too! Many people on this forum are working full time and going to school full time.

But you know your limits and will have to work out what is right for you. A lot of that will also depend on what the facility that hires you needs from you.

Best of luck!!!
