I found out I got into the one and only post-master's CNS program I applied to!! I got my MSN in 2009 and had been contemplating pursuing my goal of getting my CNS since then, so this year I just bit the bullet and applied. In fact, I began the application process just 2 weeks before the deadline! I'd been looking at different programs over the last year, and just figured, if I keep putting it off, I'm never going to go back. So, Purdue University, here I come!!! Wish me luck, I know I'm going to need it...:D

Congratulations on a big step toward your goal.

I have a question though. I got an MSN and everyone in my class was told that on graduation we would be CNSs. I've always considered myself a CNS and have a license as one, as well as prescriptive authority. I had to jump lots of extra hoops to get the license and the authority, but extra schooling wasn't part of it.

Have things changed since 2001 when I got my MSN?

I took the education track for my MSN. So, I didn't have to do the advanced assessment, pharmacology, and pathophys classes required for the CNS track. I also didn't have to do clinical hours other than a 60 hour practicum that was used to develop and implement an educational program for nurses.

So, you are doing the CNS as a post-MSN certificate?

That's what I did too. I got an MSN in 2005 in management and leadership, a post-MSN adult CNS in 2006. Then, I wanted to expand my practice to see kids so I did a second post-MSN certificate as a peds CNS.

Trauma- just curious how long did it take you do the post MSN peds CNS? I am thinking about doing this. Having a hard time looking for a position as a ACNS.

3 semesters: I went from August 2009 to July 2011. Biggie deal for me was fitting the 500+ hours of clinical in while working full time as an adult APN!

However, I must now add that since I have two certificates, I have to complete CME and practice hours for BOTH.

Definitely something to think about.

I had not even thought about the CME and practice hour requirements. I will have to reassess my options.
