Drug abuse and burnout?

  1. I believe that I read somewhere that was a high rate of drug abuse and burnout among CRNA's. Can anyone verify this info?

    Thank you.

There is a high rate of drug abuse among anesthesia providers in general. But, there is not a high burn out rate.

Anesthesia providers do face a high risk of chemical dependency; latest numbers show it to be (over the course of a career) one in five. Yes, 20%.

I never knew that - this is an interesting thread. Is the drug abuse because of using drugs so often in practice, understanding how they work, etc? Please expand on this.

A lot of research has been done on addictions in general. From what I gather, drug addiction is a treatable disease; just like diabetes and CAD, except for modality.

    Edited to add:
I'm sure that working with and around potent narcotics just makes it easier for the disease to progress; similar to cheescake and cigarettes.

Go to the AANA.com website and find the materials on chemical dependancy- very interesting!
