It always gets into a pissing contest with docs and nurses. I wish doctors would realize that nursing is a separate career choice, not a mini-doctor career. Some schools here are doing a great deal to help the issue by having med students and nursing students take the same anatomy and patho and pharm classes. They haven't found a difference in scores between the different groups wither.

Very good post, may I say! I have one thing to say: most doctors/residents are bitter about something....
Is it that they spend their 20s in school?
Could it be that the field is not what they expected?
Is it frustration, that they had to go through the abuse in their internship and residency?
Could it be anger because having the title a "doctor" does not mean they are treated like "gods"-----and that they must earn the respect of the intelligent nursing field, in order to get respect?
Do they feel threatened that there may be another profession that can make close to the same salary?

I have realized during my years of nursing, that physicians always need something to yap about......we (the CRNA's present and future) are the hot topic lately.

In regards to these residents: I listen, I smile, I laugh.....and wait for the next topic hot that month

Anger and frustration will eat them up, we (on the other hand) will have humor and thrive to be healthy adults!

WOW....I'm alternately fascinated and furious reading the posts on the residency board. Good thing I don't have hypertension.
I was amazed by the venom in some of those posts.

I don't have anything to add to what's been said, really, except perhaps this: This issue will NOT go away. You will be faced with it throughout your practice, unless you have the fortune of being a solo provider or part of a CRNA group in a small town that MDs haven't discovered yet, or that doesn't appeal to them. Even though anesthesia was a nursing speciality long before it was a medical speciality, the docs now claim it is "medicine." They are protective of what they consider to be their "peice of the pie." I know this personally, having the misfortune to live currently in an "MD-only" town. The most frustrating thing is that you cannot educate them or change their minds with words, research, logic, conversation, or FACTS. The ASA itself relies largely on fear mongering and propaganda. AND, in worst case scenarios, MDAs can convince the surgeons that they are at risk if a nurse is at the head of the table. We can only hope that "in the real world," as someone on this board mentioned, they will miraculously realize what CRNAs are, what we do, how we got to be where we are, and that we do deserve the right to be there in that capacity. But even then, it is rare that a doc will admit that.
They just aren't so hostile anymore!
SO, study hard, learn everything you can, do not ever STOP learning, and don't be surprised if you need to be prepared to defend yourself and your right to practice your chosen profession.

Bottom Line: MDA's are scared that CRNAs might make as much as them and loose their precious BMWs and power. Please, they could care less about patient care. We are the smart ones for not wasting 200 grand on 9 years of school and get right into what we do best: taking care of others. I hate MDs!!!

Do you really believe that the majority are that stupid with public comments? Or do you think we are seeing a handful? I know that there a few MDs that really nasty people, They seem to walk around with a chip on their shoulder. However, I know of a few CRNAs too, sad to say.
