Would I enjoy being a CNM?

I am struggling with my career choice right now. To give you a bit of background...I graduated Dec 2002 as a Womens Health NP. I had a difficult time finding a job in my area at the time, had a beautiful baby girl and relocated again for the 2nd time in 3yrs (hubby in military). This all occurred 2003-2006. During this time I worked in Pain management, and OB triage/Antepartum/L&D. Finally, I started my 1st WHNP job and I'm not really enjoying it. I'm beginning to find out I am a very hands on person who gets bored very quickly. My MD practices office gyn only. So no OB! I need to constantly work with my hands....I really have no interest in being in an office all day, seeing as many patients as the receptionist can book so on and so forth... I have thought about becoming a CNM, to perhaps break up the monotony and go back to my 1st love L&D. I also love the idea of assisting with c-sections. However, I have my reservations as well about this. 1. call hours, 2. the amt of responsibility does not match your compensation, and 3. There are still plenty of gyn office hours! I have even talked to a seasoned midwife who advised me not to become a midwife (because of the hours, pay, high rate of malpractice). She thought FNP or CRNA would be better. Can someone give me some insight or advice about this?

I have wanted to deliver babies since I was little. I applied to the Womens Health program at Frontier, but as of 2 days ago have decided to go with my heart and pursue a career as a CNM!! I feel so much better since I have let go of all the negative things people have told me about midwifery and have pushed on with my dream of catching babies! Now I'm just crossing my fingers that Frontier sees something special in me and admits me into the program!

l&drocks- since you are at Frontier, do you have any insight on what kind of experience and skills Frontier is looking for in their applicants? I am so excited about this program and the waiting is so rough! I keep looking at other schools for backup plans, but nothing ever feels as right for me as Frontier! I know I have to have faith that what is meant to be will be. Any advice would be warmly welcomed, and congratulations on making it through the program!

Thank you. Life has been crazy for last 3 years...but worth it. I had 3 phone interviews...just be open and honest with your answers. They want to know what is in your heart and how u plan to succeed in the course

I know this is what I want to do and therefore I don't think the malpractice would bother me. I guess its all about the patient population your looking for.

Even with malpractice rates, someone has to be a midwife. If this is your passion, go for it!! As women, midwifery is our heritage. We can not let this tradition and profession die.

It's personally not my path, but I will definitely cheer those on who follow it.
